AUGUST 1998 NEWSLETTER

Dear FL 2 DMAT Member:

Three months pass quickly. Your last newsletter was the May issue.

We hope that you find these newsletters informative, however, the best way to learn what the team is doing is to participate in the training classes and other functions. We have been very busy with monthly executive meetings and a deployment to the Florida Fires. Several positions on the team have changed as many team members have become very active in different team positions. If you are wanting to become more involved please let us know. All positions are filled at the present (except the Pharmacist) but we can create certain positions to give your creative talents a part on the team.

The team is constantly moving forward and NDMS is requiring more from each team. Therefore we need to sharpen our skills and personnel. Many teams throughout the US are taking a good look at their roster. The fact that you got this newsletter is a compliment to you because the first cut on the team has occurred. Several people have given their resignations because of family or work commitments, BUT we have also cut individuals who have not participated for 3-4 yrs and others who we cannot locate by phone or address. Therefore, if in the future the newsletters stop arriving please contact us if you still want to stay active- you may have been dropped or the newsletter may have been lost.. For your convenience and to keep current we have given you the names and numbers of the contact people in each written correspondence. Our desire is to have every member fully participating and enjoying the team. However, if you do not participate in setting up tents, knowing the organizational structure and how NDMS functions –how can you fully expect to function in the disaster situation. We at FL 2 have tried to keep you informed and excited about the team but we need your attendance and to hear from you. If infact you resign please return your uniforms ASAP-they are Government property- if lost or destroyed you will need to replace them or send $$ for team replacement.

FL 2 DMAT would like to announce 3 new appointed positions:

Ed Lyne- Supply Management Officer—Ed has been assisting Rich Holdsworth (who has stepped down from this position) and now has taken on a huge task and we know he will do an outstanding job.

Stephen Humfleet- Paramedic- as the Training Officer- Stephen is the training officer for his fire dept. so he comes already with great experience. Stephen was the training officer for the classroom training held Aug. 1st at CCH Life Center and he did an outstanding job.

Joyce Mason- Sup. Cl. Nurse- as the Telephone Chairperson- she did the call up for the classroom training and got the updated information from team members concerning address changes and DMAT status.

Thank you to all three of you for taking on these difficult but rewarding positions on this team!!!

WILDFIRES OF FLORIDA

On Tuesday, July 7th, 1998- 14 FL 2 DMAT members were deployed to Volusia County. We relieved the FL 3 (Tampa) team who had created the treatment area. The make shift treatment center was inside a large tent at the Daytona Race Track. Our assignment was to treat the firefighters who were stationed at that site. During the 4 days we treated patients with an assortment of injuries- ex- head/chest congestion, blisters, eye injuries and general malaise.

July 9th- the President held a press conference at that tent and while all of the team members got to meet him-many were able to shake his hand and have photos taken with him.

On Saturday 11th- 10 members returned to their homesite leaving 4 to continue to treat at that site until Monday at which time the treatment area was brought down and they were moved to Flagler County to augment FL 5. (Miami). Fl 6 (Orlando) was deployed to this site also. FL 1 (Pensacola) had been the original team to bring up this treatment area. Once there the patient census and severity increased as we treated more serious injuries and illnesses. The 4 members of FL 2 continued to work at this site until leaving for their homesite on Tuesday 14th.

We would like to recognize the members who were deployed to the Florida Fires:

MUST READ!!! DEPLOYMENT UNIFORM

The Executive Committee has issued new guidelines for the deployment uniform.

No longer will you be deployed with FL 2 if you arrive at the departure site in

shorts or tennis shoes.

BOOTS; The foot wear requirement is BLACK high top lace up boots. It is to your benefit to

have two pairs- (wearing wet boots is uncomfortable and creates foot problems).

PINS: You may wear collar brass (your credentials i.e. RN, MD, EMT etc.) on

your collar.

A total of 3 pins are permitted- your credentials or a caduceus (black or gold) on right collar, NDMS on the left collar

You may wear one optional pin above your name- it has to be service related on a deployment- i.e.

Several are wearing the wings that were purchased at the Olympics Task Force

deployment.

No pins may be worn on the hats.

HATS: The acceptable hats are

  1. The traditional red ball cap
  2. The Blue ( NDMS issued) ball cap (found in the duffel bags)
  3. The Bounie hat
  4. Any bandana is acceptable if worn as a head or neck sweatband.

During non-deployment functions-i.e. Hurricane Expos- you may alter this restriction on pins

as long as it is kept in good taste.

It is to your best interest to purchase these items now instead of waiting for the call up to be

deployed- you will be rushed as it is and some Army-Navy stores do not carry all sizes.

FL 2 has ordered 100 sets of earplugs for the team and will be distributed at deployments.

To further the note on supplies- the government is providing the team with equipment as they are getting every team equipped with the same supplies and equipment. Many of you who have not worked with our Basic Load would be pleasantly surprised at the equipment we store at Bill Vernay’s American Van Lines Building, Good news to come in the next newsletter.
