HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EACH OF YOU!!!

A new year brings a new year of DMAT fun and work. Before announcing the itinerary scheduled for 1999 lets review some recent events since the last newsletter was in August 1998.

Hurricane Georges

Sunday Sept. 27, 1998 at 1730 13- FL 2 DMAT members and one Bill Vernay driver departed Ft Myers enroute to Tampa where we met up with 13- FL 3 DMAT members who joined our team for the deployment to Tallahassee. We were stationed at this area to await the assessment teams report after the Hurricane. Fortunately for the areas hit by the Hurricane we were not needed. We spent our "down time" with classes on survival skills and uniform dress given by Ed Lyne-Management Supply Officer and Bill Bishop- Deputy U.C. Other classes were held through out the stay and people networked and shared team information and experience. The blending of the two teams was seamless. NDMS anticipates a lot more of team blending in the future which enables more teams to get out the door and supplements the teams lacking in members who can readily deploy. We arrived home eve of Wed. Sept 30th.

Even though we did not deploy to an active area it is always good practice to "get out the door"- good practice for us and it shows NDMS we are "ready for the call" even after a hurricane blows past our doors!!!!

We would like to recognize the members who were deployed to Hurricane Georges:

Gary Lindbergh- Unit Commander Bill Bishop- Dep U.C.

Connie Bowles- Admin Officer Mitchell Spainhower- Communications

Ed Lyne- Management Supply Officer Joyce Mason-Sup Clinical Nurse

Barbara Goodwin-RN Mary Lyne-LPN

Robert Palmer-RRT Howard Gleichman-Paramedic

William Stuckey-Paramedic Daniel Rembish-EMT

Janet Mescher-Tech Andy Moore-Bill Vernay-Driver

And the FL 3 DMAT MEMBERS

Thanks to BILL VERNAY AMERICAN VAN LINES for the truck, driver, and the loading and unloading of our equipment.

THANK YOU MEMBERS-GOOD JOB. Special thanks for the personnel who worked getting the team out the door and for those who worked replacing the equipment.

Nov 2- Mandatory Meeting -The General assembly was notified that the new ruling to remain active with FL 2 DMAT was that the member must have an alphanumeric pager and pay yearly dues. A Metrocall Rep. was present and many opted to rent the pagers at this time while other had recently acquired theirs. Thank you for those who attended and chose to stay with the team. Many members have chosen to become inactive with the team and although we value each and every member we need to press forward with goals that will sharpen our response time which will place our team in a better position to be deployed.

OPERATION -START UP- The State postponed the annual Brooksville Exercise- but that didn't stop FL 3 & FL 2 from enjoying the weekend. ( Nov 13, 14, & 15 ) FL 2 had 19 members attend.

For those who missed this exercise you missed a great weekend of fun, excellent classes and training.

Fri- the agenda opened with a visit to the Hernando County Airport Crash Rescue Fire Station where a US Coast Guard C-130 landed and we were given a tour (inside and out) of the plane along with safety classes from the Brooksville Fire Dept. A first time experience for most was the opportunity for the teams to be placed in the back of the C-130 and experience the sights, sounds and noise of the plane as it taxied a short distance.

From there we continued to the Withlacoochee Training Center and set up tents for our living quarters.

Classes were given during the weekend that consisted of survival training, uniform standards, NDMS organizational structure, K-9 search and rescue, MSU, and more. Sat. Field training with rotary wing aircraft as Bayflight from Tampa landed at the Helipad site.

The colder than normal weather made the campfire that much more welcomed as team members shared Saturday night's laughter and fun. A highlight and great exercise was the Sunday mass casualty triage and response presented by FL 3 and especially the Training Officer- Mike Kelzer- Thanks to Mike for a wonderful exercise- a lot of time and work went into the exercise and was appreciated by FL 2.

FL 2 owes a great debt to Admin /Executive Officer Ron Wagner for bringing the whole weekend together.

We also look forward to the State Exercise March 5,6,7, 1999.

Dec. 7- General Assembly Meeting was held after the Executive meeting in Port Charlotte at the ARC- (American Red Cross Bldg.). During this meeting we had a break out session and presented Audrey Seay- Admin Officer with a plaque and shared coffee and cake. Audrey Seay had announced she was retiring from the team and the plaque was just a small token from the team for all the work and years she put into creating the team and for the large responsibilities of the position of Admin Officer. She will be greatly missed. FL 2 submitted her name to NDMS as our FL 2 "Outstanding DMAT Member for the year 1998". Although she does not plan to attend the 1999 NDMS Conference in Wash D.C. in May her name will be announced at the opening ceremonies. THANK YOU AUDREY AND YOU WILL BE MISSED.

During 1998 NDMS gave Level I DMAT's $5,000.00 to spend on equipment and maintenance- the money goes quickly with the amount of upkeep it takes with a team. Our funds were spend on radio equipment- headset, batteries and analyzer, logistic tools, medical records, uniforms, supplies, magnetic signs, signs for the trailers etc.

1999's amount is $8,000.00 -re boxing the basic load is primary goal and getting the medical cache up to date.

Two Orientation classes have occurred recently-

Please welcome to FL 2 :Kenneth Baker- EMT, Angela Dunaway-Paramedic, Wendy Norman-EMT, Amy Haston-EMT, Audrey Dearmond-RN, Steven Moses-Paramedic, Cindi Yeager- Paramedic, Steven Speer-Paramedic, Don Morley-EMT, Tom Evans-Paramedic, Ernest Dabney-EMT.
