My girlfriend has been a juvenile diabetic for a long time. she often has a very dry vagina, especially before and after menstruation. sometimes, even ky jelly doesn't quite do the trick. Is there a lubricant that will stay moist, and, at the same time, reduce risks of vaginal infections. I love her very dearly and want to keep our love-making alive and hot, as well as passionate. Forgive my bluntness, but I want to know of other diabetic women who can share their experiences with me and my girlfriend. thanks.

Daniel,

Brace yourself for a straightforward and frank answer. <g> It's what the section is for.

KY is intended for single-insertion/removal type medical applications, not prolonged friction, so it breaks down rather quickly. There are a whole series of obstetric or recreational lubricants which have more appropriate properties for intercourse.

One of the more commonly available alternatives is Astroglide. It's moderately widely available in pharmacies. Ask. Or get her to. Like KY, it doesn't contain a spermicide, so it may not be the best choice for contraceptive action if you want that property from your lubricant. It's water soluble and safe for use with condoms. It tastes somewhat better than KY, with a similar semi-sweet aftertaste and is not harmful if ingested. It's made by BioFilm Inc., 3121 Scott St., Vista, CA 92003. Call 800-848-5900 in CA, 800-325-5695 in the rest of the US (Note that these numbers are a year out of date and I don't currently have my reference information handy). Free samples are available for doctors to distribute.

Anther one, slightly thicker than Astroglide but still thinner than KY, is Probe. Comes in assorted varieties, with or without spermicide, but you're unlikely to find it at a pharmacy. I haven't tasted it, nor read any reports of the taste.

If you're in New York or San Francisco, I can recommend some excellent stores to visit and try some assorted products. If not, one mail order vendor that's highly reputable is Good Vibrations:

938 Howard St, St 101 San Francisco, CA 94103 This is mail order only, not their store address.

internet:goodvibe@well.sf.ca.us 415 974 8990

If you have questions, ask. The staff are very well informed and helpful.

My suggestion: buy one of each type and see which you prefer, just as you'd do with other products. Or ask here if you'd like further information on this or related topics.

For vaginal infections, I'm assuming you mean yeast infections. Best answer I know for these is the best achievable bg control. You'll also find some files in the library discussing this. Key is going to a doctor first, to ensure that it really is what you suspect. Take care yourself, because men can also suffer from yeast infections, though it's less common.

Glad you liked it. I did some research on Saturday. Of the pharmacies I tried in Plymouth, England, all 4 stocked KY and one stocked Orthogynol (a lubricant with Nonoxynol-9 spermicide).

One US member pointed out to me that her local supermarket stocks Astroglide.

James,

Just for info I checked the three local supermarkets and found that all three carried three type of "personal lubricants" (not counting KY) and an average of 13 types of condoms. Non of these stores have pharmacies they are just supermarkets. Of course I live in S. Cal.<g>

Tnx, Corky

Marilyn,

Glad you liked it. Please don't hesitate to ask if you need any information about this (or anything else on this general subject, for that matter).

Now I have my reference material, there's also a product by the name of Aqua Lube. Similar properties to Probe, but more likely to be found in general stores, by virtue of it's more acceptable name.

James,

I myself am partial to Astroglide, a little goes a long way even though it is somewhat expense. There is a product from Women's Health Institute called, simply enough, Lubricating Gel. It comes in handy one-application packets that are convenient to carry in a purse or condom case. I found this product at the drug store.

I was unaware that this was a problem associated with Diabetes, I attributed my "problem" to my hysterectomy. Just glad to hear I wasn't the only one.
