Why Do People Sexually Abuse Children?

Before answering this question, I would like to remind you that the abuser is always responsible for the abuse. The child is never responsible.

  1. "Some abusers are very insecure people. Being 'intimate' with children makes them feel important. The love and affection children give freely to adults make this type of abuser feel special and loved";
  2. To feel powerful, to feel the satisfaction of controlling another human being ;
  3. "Some offenders think love equals sex. Therefore, when a child shows them love and affection, the offender thinks the child is asking for sexual contact."
  4. To take out their rage about their own abuse on a child. May be either violent or non-violent (Mather & Debye 212).
  5. As part of cult activity. May be a "combination of the desire to have power, to hurt, to act out anger and rage, and to control through fear."
(Mather & Debye 207-213)
