Mel grew up in
Brooklyn, NY and attained his undergraduate degree in mathematics
from New York University. He went on to Michigan State for his
graduate degree in mathematics. He did a stint with NASA, working
on the space program at the Flight Research Center in Edwards,
California, but has spent the last 32 years as a teacher, first
in NY for 1 year, then MSU for 3 years and finally in Midland,
Michigan since 1972. He is currently the Mathematics Department
Head at the local high school. His students have received State
and National recognition for their achievements.
He and his wife Cheryl married in 1975 and will proudly be celebrating their 25th anniversary next year. They have two children: Keith, a junior at MSU, and Tara, a freshman at University of Michigan. Gee, I bet it gets real tense in the ol' homestead during those Wolverine/Spartan games -- especially since dad was a Spartan, too! Completing the home is their American Eskimo dog, Casey who did graduate obedience training school, but never made the Dean's List.
Mel loves teaching, mathematics, and computers.
He is an avid sports fan and used to play eons ago.
Unfortunately, his disease has taken a toll, as it does for most
of us. But perhaps his biggest frustration is that he sill has no
definite diagnosis, though he likely has Crohn's Disease as he
has clear inflammation in terminal ileum and colon and more and
more symptoms of CD.
