Müllerian adenosarcoma of the uterus

specimen
image

This is a Müllerian adenosarcoma in the hysterectomy specimen of a 44-year-old woman, who presented with menorrhagia and iron deficiency anemia. The uterus contained many leiomyomata, and this 2-cm yellow adenosarcoma, snuggled up in the crevice of a leiomyoma, was a serendipitous finding. Although situated entirely in the myometrium, this potentially malignant tumor has a polypoid configuration, giving it a "shelled-out" appearance in this view.
