Lock Accessories

There are no two sets of locks that are alike-and
neither is the way you can accessorize them. Locks
can be decorated in numerous ways depending on your
mood or the occasion. Have fun with your hair and
don't be afraid to experiment with different
accessories. As of now, accessories for locks are not
widely available, so take advantage of what is
available for lock styles and be as creative as you
like!

Beads are not just for braids anymore. If you have
thin locks, beads can be an alternative for you. Beads
can be added to all or a few locks. They can be
attached using hair thread. Author Tulani Kinard
gives specific instructions in her natural hair care
book, No Lye. Beads come in all shapes and colors.
You can mix and match types and colors for effect.
They can be purchased at many black hair care or craft
stores.

Cowrie shells can serve as inexpensive lock
accessories. It's fairly common to see locked
individuals with one or two cowrie shells in their
locks. Speak with your loctition about adding these to
your hair.

For those with teenage locks, bobby pins can be used
as accessories. Pins have become the latest hair
fashion statement and are available in just about
every department or discount store. Bobby pins are
simple to use and can be slid easily into the hair for
decoration. Some pins are elaborate with studs and
jewels. Others are simple with a unique design or
splash of color.

For those with longer mature locks, barrettes can be
worn as accessories. Several companies are making
"thick hair" barrettes, which are a bit larger to
accommodate people with thicker hair. In some
instances, the metal prong inside the barrettes can be
removed to expand for locked hair. Barrettes can be
found in all shapes and styles. They can be used to
hold back portions or all of the hair. Smaller
barrettes can also be clipped over a lock or two for
emphasis.

Headbands can be made using ribbon or a colorful
fabric print rolled up into bandanas. Cloth can be
folded into a rectangle or a triangle and then rolled
to make a colorful headband. The fabric is then
wrapped around the head and tied in the back or front.
The tied ends can be hidden by tucking them under the
fabric or left alone to stick out, depending on the
look you want.

Jewels and crystals can also be used to adorn locks.
Crystals can give a special energy to locks. The site
New Bein offers a wide variety of
crystals and jewelry made specifically for locks and
other natural styles.

For thick locks, colored ribbon, yarn or string can be
tied around or braided between locks to create a
special look. Thin gold or silver ribbon is excellent
for this purpose. Also, instead of plain rubber bands,
try using an old woven or hemp bracelet to hold your
locks.

And let's not forget oils, which can be an overlooked
accessory. Blend your favorite scented oil into
unscented hair oil, like sweet almond or olive, and
apply to freshly washed locks. Your hair will look,
as well as smell good.

The key to successful accessorizing is to be
proactive. Always, look for new ways to present your
hair to the world. Happy accessorizing!
