I've suffered from a serious attack this year from goodpastures. I was taken to hospital mid May 2000 suffering from breathing difficulties, the next thing i know it's four weeks later as i came out of an induced coma. The disease is extremely rare and i'm fed up having so few medical experts able to understand my problems. I'm glad i can direct them to this site and others on the internet. It's also interesting to see other examples of the syndrome from around the world and see how they've coped. All the best JP

My friend, Lavona, was just diagnosed with GS. I was devastated when I found out last night at the hospital because we both thought her illness was caused by her flu shot which she took while she had a cold. It is 3 days before Christmas and all of us are scared. They think after the biopsy that it is in the early stage which is good. After reading different web sites I have a better idea what this disease actually is. My heart goes out to all those people with rare and unknown diseases. Lavona is very c ose to me and my family and I want to know everything I can to help support my best friend in what she is going to go through. Any information will be greatly appreciated! God bless you all.

Very informative! I am in the process of waiting for ANCA test results for Wegeners or Goodpastures. Had blood in urine for three months, skin ulcers for several months, developed asthma out of nowhere and put on 40 mg of Predisone for the time being. Pl ase e-mail or give advice based on what you experienced. I am a 42 year old single woman, going to school full-tmie for a change in careers - from Property Management to Nursing. My symptoms I have had over the last 10+years have gotten worse and I see a high percentage of similarity in Wegener's at this point. Doc said probably biopsy after blood tests if they show positive. Talk to ya soon!

I found your site to be very informative, and it is obvious to see it is helping others. Someone close to me has this disease (which has been in remission for 1 year). Hovever, she lost all Kidney function as a result. She never experienced any problem with her lungs, which made it difficult to diagnose. Anything anyone can do to bring hightend awareness to this disease is desperately needed. I wish you all the best.

I experienced Goodpastures Syndrome in 1984 at the age of 36. At that time, it was considered a "male-oriented" medical syndrome with few females experiencing the syndrome. I was treated at The Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia and under ent plasmapheresis, blood transfusions, Cytoxan, and predisone treatments. No one knew what to do and told me that it was best that I "get my ducks in a row".... prognosis at that time was poor. However, after months of undergoing various tratments, my ungs and kidneys began to respond positively. I am now free from any symptoms of Goodpastures and the only lingering problem is high blood pressure that needs to be treated for life. It is really a strange medical condition and in 1985, very hard to dia nose. I feel very fortunate that I was treated at a medical school facility and had the best of care. Of course, it helps when you have a "rare" condition that interests so many different specialists who do not want to give up hope for a cure. Let me k ow how you are progressing with therapy, etc. Take care/Jo Ann

She was a Beautician for 40 years-breathing in the chemicals and also was exposed to exposed to chemical fumes as a factory worker. she also smoked for a few years. she sometimes has breathing problems. is not doing well wi h walking. I have a mass in my left lung which is shrinking. Have to go or a catscan this week. I have good days and bad days. In the last six months Iv,e begun to feel the best I have in two years. In 1995 I was diagnosed with Goodpastures syndrom,it was three months after i have had my son Sebastian.I had to stay in hospital for 6 months,I had to take alots of medications and they gave me plasmaforeses.First I didn´t know if they could save my kidn ys or not,but after a while they told me that wasn´t the case.So I started with dialys three times a week for a year and three months. They had to wait at least a year before they could transplant me.They tested my mother and found out that her kidney was the right one for me,so i got her kidney and now I have had her kidney for a while.I hope that I will be healthy for a lots of years and that they found out some better medications with less sideeffects.I would be glad if you wanted to send me a mail on j rry.c.eriksson@swipnet.se ..........have a nice time//////Niina from Sweden

He has been tested for Goodpasture's many times always with a ne ative result. Now during this hospitalization he has tested positive......have you ever run into this situation before. This hospitalization started with a high temp and the doc feeling he was battling a pnemonia. Normally we have bleed signs and the need for oxygen. He has been on a ventilator for 21 days. He had been working at a gas station for the last 6 months without incident. Now I wonder about that. We have great confidence in our doctors but are always looking for more information. Thank you for a very informative site. My mother in law was diagnosed with GPS 4 years ago at age 65. She lost full use of both kidney's and now survives on dialysis (peratenial) 4 times a day. Originally the disease only affected the kidneys but she has recently spent 10 days in intensive care for acute phnemonia which her doctors suspect was related to GPS. She went from a vibrant fun loving woman to a feeble old lady in a short time. Without dialysis she would not be with us today and we are very grat ful for that but her lifestyle revolves around her illness and fight for survival.

My sister's son, who will hopefully live to see his 21st birthday in December, has been diagnosed with Goodpastures Syndrome. My sister is a nurse and is staying with him in the hospital 24/7. He was diagnosed early last week and was immediately put in he hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, his kidneys have already begun to fail and he is "already" having to have dialysis treatments. I'm afraid the outlook does not look good for him. I am not sure if he ever did any kind of drugs, but I do know th t he started smoking when he was just barely a teenager. I wish they could have diagnosed him earlier. My sister is so afraid he is dying. She is being tested to see if she can give him a kidney. The drs in Huntsville, AL are doing all they can to hel him get better, but so far, nothing has worked. With each passing day, Jason gets worse. Thanks for having such a wonderful site. I am collecting as much info for my sister as I can. Until Jason was diagnosed with this syndrome, I had never heard of t before. I'm glad you are doing okay!!! Good luck in the future!!!

May God bless you for the information you have provided us. My nephew has contracted this disease just two weeks ago. The family and his parents, my sister and brother in law are devastated. He just received a place at Chelsea College of Art but has had n opportunity to celebrate. Now his parents visit him three times a day in hospital and are trying to be very brave. They hope for good news but things have not changed. He is on a ventilator and receiving blood plasma exchange. No one can tell us the prog osis. Can he recover and resume a normal life. Go to art college? I pray for him and light candles for him and his parents in church. But I will pray for you too and all those who have shared their experiences at your site. You are wonderfully brave. God less you.

What an informative site! A very close friend of mine was diagnosed with GP in November. He is currently in remission, but with the meds and dialysis his quality of life has diminished drastically. He was diagnosed by a wonderful general practitioner, D . Middleton, of Dallas, Texas and treatment started immediately (after previous physicians told him he had the flu) This doctor literally saved his life. He has been so depressed I was busy looking for a support group when I found this site. THANK YOU! its great to know there is a calm AFTER the storm.

Hi My mother was diagnosed with good pasture's syndrome in Feb 2000. After being in the hospital ICU unit for over a month, she was finally released. She is taking medicine to fight the disease. Her kidneys don't function anymore so she has to do dialysis 3-times a week. I live in Buffalo NY but my mom lives in Rio Grande City Texas. I wish that I was closer to her. My other siblings take care of her. Every chance I get I fly down to see her. When she was diagnosed with this --we had never heard of it. I'a so glad that you have this website it is so informative. It makes you realize that there are others out there in the same predicament. I know my mom has a long way to go but I know she will make it. God Bless. May 8 2000

One of my dearest friends just passed away from Goodpasture's syndrome at the age of 41. He was diagnosed in his early 20's and at that time, was considered lucky to live beyond a few years.... or months. He was written up in many medical journals back hen as he fought this disease....and we all lived through it with him. We both lost another good friend a few months ago (who had nursed him through his last bad bought with it) and I think he just finally realized it was time to go.... he had been figh ing it so long. Now I read all these stories with renewed hope that so many of you will win the war with this disease... I just wish I could have showed him this sight ages ago.. God Bless you Dennis Littlefield, of Portland, OR and you all who have con ributed to this page...

Hello, my name is theresa ziehm. My husband thomas was diagnosed with goodpastures in 1986. He felt like he had the flu. So he went to the doctor. The doctor said to get plenty of rest and come back in one week. He did and he was worse. So they did a urin test and he had blood in his urine. He was rushed down to a bigger hospital in detroit. they put him on cytoxin and prednisone. they said he only had 5% function of his kidneys. The doctor was Dr. sidney Baskin. He was really good. He Knew what he was do ng. They then did a kidney biopsy and discovered it was goodpastures. They then did 27 plasma phleurisis treatments. Don't know if I spelled that right. I met my husband in Jan. of 1988. I was 18 he was 40. we married the following March. Things were goi g good. Tom had 25% function in his kidneys and he was working as a police officer. A job he held for 22 years. He had to medically retire in 1990. His kidneys were only functioning 5%. So he went on dialysis. It was awful. In the last ten years he has end red a brain tumor, falling and rupturing his spleen, a doctor puncturing his lung- I was not impressed, he received a kidney transplant in 1993 It lasted 5 years and in june of 1998 his kidney failed once again. we will be married 11 years march 21st. Som days he wishes he was dead. But he has 2 boys from his previos relationship. and is now a grandpa. But doctors tell him he is a miracle. that he should of died years ago. Well he got the kidney end of goodpastures. His lungs are perfect. not saying goodp stures could come back any time. I'm in the process of getting a computer so I'm at the library. Tom is in remission. He is 52 yrs. and says he feels so helpless. I do everything around the house. Some days he does not want to go on. I don't blame him. He s also a vietnam vet. and one of his buddies from nam was just diagnosed with lupus which is very similar. well good luck to all of you and god bless. theresa and tom

But, all the greatest things in my life have happened since I contracted Goodpastures - my marriage to my wonderful wife, and the births of our two sons! It is great to see all these stories on these pages because it helps put the names of real people on the disease. I've gone too long with being told "it's a very rare disease", and I am glad to meet others who share my same diagnosis... :)

Goodpasture's syndrome took the life of my brother -in-law over four years ago. He had fought the disease in the ICU for two full months and struggled to make it passed mother's Day. He left behind my sister and thier then 4month old baby boy. We were errified when we heard that there was a possibility the predisposition for the disease was passed genetically and my nephew could get the disease in the future. Thank you for having this page.

My best friend was diagnosed in the beginning of January. She had lots of treatments and was in the hospital for over a week. She had just had the plasmapheresis catheter removed a few days ago and her doctors felt she was doing well. She had a couple trokes on Valentines day and is unconcious in the hospital. I'm so worried about her.

My brother died last june from goodpastures (lung haemmorage) aged 29. We never realised how serious it was, he was so fit and strong. These past months have been very difficult, thanks for this website and good luck for the future. Damian

My cousin has had nose bleeds from time to time. He had one when I saw him the Friday before last. A few days ago he went to the doctor and was given medicine for an ear infection. He has been in the hospital for the past 2 days. He is heavily sedated now He was coughing up blood when they rushed him to the hospital two days ago. He has thalosemia which runs in our family. The doctors think he either has Wagoner's disease or this. He had a lot of seizures as a small child, but did not have epilepsy, and t ey treated that with medication finally after months and never did find the reason for them. His name is Matthew. Everyone calls him Matt. He just turned 14 last 02/03/00. His birthday party was supposed to be Sunday, but it was called off because he was ick. We thought with the flu, but now it is very bad. We are very worried. Please, pray for him.

My youngest brother had Goodpasture's syndrome (1996-98) and my other brother was able to donate one of his kidneys on Thanksgiving Day enabling him to be home with his three kids in time for Christmas. Unfortunately, in February he contracted a virus a d because of his low immune system he was not able to fight the virus. But he did fight - he fought hard to live for three long weeks. I miss him every day, but my message is that if you have the transplant, please be careful of any virus, protect yours lf, be careful. You are all in my prayers, because I know what you and your family are going through.
