Why Do I feel so strongly about living as an out and open lesbian?  Good question.  I feel it is important that we have the same rights, privileges and penalties as other people in the world.  As someone that lived in the heterosexual world I lived openly as a heterosexual-holding hands with my spouse in public, exchanged a kiss or hug, shared healthcare plans, auto insurance discounts and tax cuts.  We also had to file for divorce rather than simply end a relationship-it was more than simply moving out. As such, we made sure we knew we were done before filing anything-entered therapy- the whole bit.  

Why is it that as a lesbian these things are denied me? I am no longer able to simply die and assume my partner gets everything, I now need a will to ensure it.  I can no longer assume that in the event one of us is in a hospital that we will receive the same visiting rights of spouses/fiancées.  Most lesbians I know don't feel safe walking down the streets of Philadelphia's Gayborhood holding hands with their girlfriend/wife.  I personally hold my gf's hand because I enjoy it, not to make a statement but I don't get tormented as a result. I think people are more open than they used to be but we still have a very long way to go. Why is it that California, home to so many gay and lesbian couples, felt the ability to vote to NOT recognize gay/lesbian marriages performed in other states?   And currently, unknown to many, the closest thing to same sex marriage is Vermont's newly enacted Civil Unions. YAY VERMONT!

I don't understand why some people consider love wrong.  Lesbian couples especially have much better staying together statistics than heterosexual couples.  Why are we unfit parents? The argument that we will turn our kids gay is absurd! Would I rejoice in my child being gay? As long as my child finds love, I don't care what form it takes-but I would like my child to be safe from harm over their love.  I would also like to point out that the majority of lesbians and gays I know as well as Bi and transgendered folks I know all came from HETEROSEXUAL families!   DOH!  So why not let us try and raise a few breeders?
