I have just found your site and it's amazing. I was diagnosed in 1987 with AML and was treated, extremely well, by the fantastic doctors at Christies Holt Radium Institute in Manchester. I lost a lot of good friends along the way, but also gained a lot. I had a new treatment at the time which meant having my own marrow taken out, cultivated and put back, which worked very well. Like you I never once thought of giving up, or of dying, and I am now living a normal happy life. There is always hope, and with support from family and friends you will get through. Your writing is wonderful. I like that.I have the similar shocking experience. My only son RAFI died November '97 .He was 14 suffering with ALL. Following that with the support of some of my friends & welwishers we started working for the illfated childre with Cancer in our poor country. You will be shocked to know Child Cancer -Leukaemia treatment is available in our country. 98% of patient die with out simple or primary treatment.Rest persons are fortunate enough to get or avail treatment abroad.Now we re working under the banner of CHILDERN LEUKAEMIA ASSISTANCE AND SUPPORT SERVICES (CLASS).Within two years of our organisation,we could give support to 78 patients and their family.Mean time 38 of them died. We are working with the rest who are almost on he journey to end.Though there is no proper treatment facility we provide them some medicare service,good food,toys,entertainmet facility on counselling and informations.We send some of the patients to abroad. I had acute lymphoblastic luekaemia when I was 3 I don't remember much just that I hated it and lots of people came to visit me,such as Matthew Kellly.I'm now 16 and I'm writing an essay on it because I want to find out more about it! My check ups stopped last year christmas time and I was very thankful at that point, Iknew it was finally over. Hi Goran, Have just found your homepage through a search with Yahoo. I was 52 when diagnosed with the same leukaemia, and have been in remission for nearly 6 years! I had my own bone marrow transplanted and I agree with your feeling about the hospital f od.....(It tasted like cardboard!) Both the leukaemia and transplant was terrible. But like you, I had the support of a loving husband and family and doctors and nurses were so caring. Hi, I am looking for sites about the new drug used for AML. It is called STI 571. My husband has had CML for 8 1/2 years and is now going into the acute phase. There is a trial clinic for the drug going on in Chicago,IL but the program is full. We are looking other places. The Doctor says they are now contracting with the Pharmecutical Companies to get the drug on the market, But until then I would like to try to get him into a program. Bob is doing pretty good. He is still working everyday. He has only been hospitalized once, I think it was because he was on such a high dosage of Interferon and then the doctor added oral chemotherapy pill (Hydrea)because of the Sarcomas he is getting o the left side of his neck,and it caused chest and back pain. His weight has gone from 150 LB to 138 and he is 5'7" so he is pretty thin. He started having problems last November. He is not computer literate, so I will be writing. He is 66 years old. By the way we will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary, Sept 18. I am so proud of us and VERY VERY THANKFUL Bob is still with me.

I was diagnosed w/ AML 10/98. After a year of high-dose chemo, I was in remission, but 3 mos. later the AML returned. After more chemo, I finally had a stem cell transplant at University Hospitals in Cleveland (USA). I was extremely lucky that one of my b others was a 6-point match. I have done very well since the transplant. I just wanted to mention the stem cell transplant because it is a new procedure with much higher success rates than the bone marrow transplant and it's much easier on the donor - no s rgery, just neupogen for 3 days and then they take the stem cells from the blood-stream like a reverse transfusion. Anyway, people who might be edgy about pain associated w/ marrow donation might be near a facility that does the stem cell transplant inste d. Congrats on your continued health! Leesa

She has been in remission now for 6 months. We pray to God that it will continue. To anyone out there supporting like we are, listen to Goran- he is absolutely right- pray all the time, but have your dark moments on your own, NEVER let the sufferer think that you don't think that the treatment will work- treat it like any other hospital stay- it will end eventually and they will get back to normal. Tell them about what you are doing- they have enough time to think about their situation- be normal, treat setbacks as blips, not catastrophes. Be there whenever they call and don't hang on too much to good news- it can all change so quickly- what do you then say when it is bad? We are supporting from 200 miles away, so we always say when we will visit- they look forward to it, and wen you do go, make them get the tea! They are not a non- person anymore who needs to be fussed, they are just a bit below par at the moment. Don't be put off or take offence at things they say, you have no idea, so don't pretend that you have. Listen and let them talk. Talk them forward about what they will be able to do when they are well again, this is a setback that they will overcome. Tell them how well they are doing and let them know that you love them and are proud of them. Good luck to anyone reading this. We hope our experience of AML will remain in the past tense, but if not, then we just swing into action once again and support through the shitty hospital bits again.

Dear Zoran My daughter, now 23 yo, was diagnosed with AML in February 1997. She was uni student at the time. 3 months of chemo, then into remission for 12 months. Further 3 months chemo and search for compatible marrow which was found in September 19 8. After 10 days of chemo, surgical implantation of Hickman Catheter etc. she was ready for Matched unrelated donor transplant at Westmead Hospital on 19.10.98 has been successful, but not without many complications. Every day is wonderful and we rejoic . Like you, we spent an enjoyable long holiday after the transplant - we packed up the car, joined Youth Hostels and explored Queensland for 2 months this time last year. My daughter is well and happy. She recently attended the CanTeen Ball in Sydney. I will be forever grateful to her donor and all the other prospective donors who have placed their names with Aust Red Cross Blood Banks. I am eternally grateful to all peo le who donate money to research. Like Anthony Warlow says "there is a cure, and we can find it" My very best wishes to you. A lad who was in my class for one year at school suffered with Leukaemia. It has now come back and he is in a critical state in Alder Hey hospital, Liverpool. He has kidney and liver failure. I don't really know him that well but I would like to encour ge people to help those suffering from Leukaemia. I am only 17 at the moment and when I am 18 I will sign up as a bone marrow donor. I am also raising money through a swimathon in April. I'm going to donate this to the "Children with Leukaemia Trust". This is one way in which I hope to help William and others like him. I lost my mother in December of 99 to leukeamia. I would just like to say how brave I think you are. The pain and suffereing she went through to get to a "good day" just didn't seem worth it to me. I have AML in Houston, Texas. I relapsed in January (probably before). Alone down here and terrified after reading about "...poor prognosis for relapsed patients..." etc. on internet. I am type O+ after hundreds of rbc packed and platelet transfusions. No one's been an HLA match for me. Tomorrow is my bone marrow biopsy & asp to see if I am back in remission after reinduction chemo (took 35 days for cells to recover). Scared s--tless about what cells they'll see have grown back - so lonely down here. Men and friends I meet down here disappear once they hear I have Leukemia and bills leave me broke so I don't get out much. Family can't handle hearing the truth. Please advise.

Like you, I have AML and have been fighting it's out come since Nov. 1995. I think your website is an inspiration. I know, I have the same great support team in my family, friends, co-workers, and lives I have touched through the years. I lived in the hospital for 1 1/2 years. This was the longest time of my life, but I am out and about doing some normal things. Although I have complications from my stay such as permenant nerve damage, diabetes, and eliostomy(long story), I am back to doing almost the same things as I did before my illness. Though I havent read finish about your story, but I know I will sure to read them all in order to help myself or other people who may turned out to be like us. As for me, I only suspect because I feel very tired almost everyday, admited hospital for blood cells n platelettes problem several times. Though I was not diagnosed with any named disease, I still wonder if I would be one day. My spinal cord got pains lately frequently. Well, its not that I don't go for Doctors, its because I don't like to take tho e medicine they have prescribe me as 'those' medi made me very bloated. I really frightened if I were to be disgnosed, I don't know how to deal with it especially in financial term. Its pretty scary. Anyhow, I'll see how I can do. Thanks for your story.

I am so happy that you survived Leukemia with such a determined spirit and great sense of humor. I was diagnosed with APL on March 19, 1999. I was admitted to the hospital the day I found out, and had to stay there for 32 days straight!(I spent my 30th birthday in the hospital) I went through 3 consolodations, was in and out of the hospital, had to have 4 different lines because they kept getting infected...I had my last dose of chemo in July. I'm in remission, taking a maintenance drug called Retanoic Acid (or vesanoid) Winning my battle with Leukemia inspired me to get on with my life and move t New York City..I now have a great job in the Film department of a world renowned museum. I am so happy you are doing so well & yes you are absolutely right without family & friends I also would have not made it! I am a little older than you are I am 55:).. well more than a little ok?. I was diagnosed with AML Jul 2nd 1999. I also went through induction and consolidation. My last consolidation round is the 14th of February. I am in remission and have been since th induction. Hopefully I will not need a BMT. (not quite sure about that yet)Like you I have wonderful doctors, and a great team of nurses. What has helped me the most is a good sense of humor, relaxation, meditations and visual imagery exercises. Oh yes and no junk food! My mother is suffering from Leukaemia. She was diagnosed six years ago and we never found a donor. She has been in and out of the hospital for 8 months now. Monday she is leaving to go to Houston, Texas where she will begin taking a new drug, CML, I think is the name of the drug. I have heard positive things about it. My mom was going to do a bone marrow transplant from her own stem cells, but the doctor later discovered that the cells they removed had cancer. We have desperately been searching for a donor that can posssibly save her life. Our only hope now is this drug or chemo therapy until her body gives up on her. I read your story and I am happy for you. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. At this point we can only pray that God does not ake her so soon. It was nice to view your web site. My husband was digoused with AML-M Zero in April of 1998. He has had a lot of chemo and went into remission for over a year. In july of 1999 he relapsed and had more chemo and went back into remission. Then in Octobe of 1999 he relapsed again and has been that way since. My question to you is why can't he let things that happened in the past go simple disagreements. I love my hubsand and I have been by his side every step of the way. Hi, I am an AML m6 survivor. I was diagnosed Dec. 17th 1997. I went through initial chemo, then 4 heavy duty treatments over 6 months and it was over. So I thought. I am 29 years old now and the last 6 months my platelets have dropped. Yesterday the were 35,000. Prednisone didn't work so now I've started Win Rho. I also have Type I Diabetes which I've had since I was 9. I am very positive like you and I've enjoyed reading your site. I would love to do something like this myself, but don't know w ere to begin. I just got on the Internet myself. My recovery from the leukemia seemed to take forever, but now I look back and see how easy I had it. Dear Goran, I have a fifteen year old son who is currently undergoing a bone marrow transplant at Fairview Medical Center at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. He is a strong and courageous young man, and I am going to urge him to read your website. He was diagnosed with AML Sept. 11, 1998, and relapsed Sept. 15, 1999. He underwent chemotherapy to get him back in remission, and had his actual transplant last evening. I have to say, watching all the preparations and procedures beforehand l ft me with a new perspective on life in general. Anyway, you have the right attitude, and that is half the battle. Hello! Greetings from the Philippines!!! I've read ur page and I'm so touched of what I've read. I'm a mother of a 5yr. old girl, our only child, who suffers from ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). She was diagnosed when she was about 3 yrs. old and right away undergone a chemotheraphy treatmen . It was very painful for us to see and hear her cry receiving those shots, those painful bone marrow aspiration (BMA)and intrathecal (IT)procedures. Her Doctors said that she belongs to a good risk one with 70% survival. It gives us a little relief thoug . We prayed and didn't loose hope, for we know that there's a Healer up there. Right now, she's on complete remission and on off-theraphy. By December 18, 1999, she'll have her IT and BM checked to evaluate her responses on her off-theraphy. We hope and p ay that everything's gonna be fine and it's gonna be an answered prayers!!! Hope you're in good shape. Hope to hear from you and we'll include u in our prayers... Thankyou for taking the time to develop such a great and inspiring web site. I am from Victoria, Australia and I am 22 years old. My grandmother has been recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia which is apparently rare in older people. She is o ly a very young 72 years and my family and I are now faced with the prospect that we may not have her for christmas. She has already been through one lot of chemo but after 6 weeks of remission it has raised its ugly head again. She has a fighting spirit though and a family who love her as much as we possibly could. Anyway, would you keep her in your thoughts as she is about to commence a triple dose of the most aggressive chemo she can have. I have to say that your style and attitude make for a refreshing change, after all cancer is a sign of the zodiac. As APML has come to visit me again, the prospect of more hospital has me in something of a spin, the memories of the last 12 months are still to fresh. You have helped to put it in a different perspective tho. Hickmans is a lovely device isn't it......... Bone marrow biopsies are a REAL pain in the arse. naso gastric tubes get up your nose..... just wind up the morph....... what a roller coaster ride it is. :-)

I found out a couple of months ago that my best friend has Leukemia (she has an extremely rare form of AML). I don't think that I could stop crying, I was so scared for her & her family. The first thing I did after I visited her was search the web. I h ve found this site to be extremely informative & comforting in a way. I really appreciated the tips on how to be a friend & be supportive. Thank you so much for all of that. I have had two close relatives suffer leukemia the first being my sister and she survided,sadly the second my father-in-law passed away within 2 days of going into hospital. I would like to say to you keep the fight going as like you said earlier the vital link to curing cancer is out there somewhere and must be found to prevent all the family grief it causes. The hospital where my father-in law was treated said that not enough data was available on patients,and so we gave permission for the hospital to carry out a special post mortem to obtain more information. With your connections and fighting spirit would it not be a good idea to contact as many hospitals via email around the world and have a international data base set up in which all information can be entered on patients,wheter they lived or died,from this hopefully some one can spot the missing link. I hope so, I really do hope so. Keep up the good work please.

I stumbled upon your site when looking for information of Leukocytosis. I had a biospy, aspiration done to yrs. ago. He was looking for chronic granuclytic leukemia. It showed up negative. He now wants to do another biospy to be safe. I swore I would nev r go through it again. I promised God if I didn't have leukemia I would be a donor. I just don't know if they would take mine because of the high WBC. Your site is very encouraging and I commend you for all you have endured. I sent an email earlier, but I don't think it went through. I was just about to go to sleep when my son-in-law called to say his son (my grandson) had him on the phone for a long time. Grandson was just diagnosed earlier this evening with AML. NOT WHAT! He seemed to take it well, but can't really tell what he is thinking. I know I am afraid, angry, bewildered, don't know the words. Doctors made it sound like he will be fine. After reading various items on the net, I am even more scared. What to tell him (14 years old). Afraid to make him afraid with chances of cure/remission? Just came home from visiting my 14 year old grand son (1 of 9) at the hospital. He was diagnosed with AML this evening. My first reaction on hearing leukemia was to leave the room and go cry in the ladies room. I am afraid for him, but in all honesty I guess I am frightened because I don't know what to do. I did print out your page on what to do if a friend or loved one has leukemia. I hope I can pull it off. I did get myself together and go back to the room to listen to the doctor. The best thing I heard was my grandson telling his other grandmother (on the phone from Mass.) that he would be getting chemo on Monday and be home in ten days, then cured in 3 months. Dilusion, truth, fear, hope. I don't know. I guess that is it for now, I'm beginning to babble. Thanks for your story.

I would like to commend you on your encouraging words and tremendous strentgh through all that you have been through. I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia/Lymphoma on August 6, 1998, when I was 19 years old. I am still undergoing treatment ight now. Your courage, positivity and strength is amazing. Do you agree that these things are sent to test us? That it is only the strong people who are handed these "black-cards" in life, in order to learn, gain and teach from their experience.? Goran, your soul has experienced many things which others have not/will never. When it leaves your physical form, you can be safe in the knowledge, that you have saved someone else’s life by learning - because. you COULD..you are strong enough now to face any challenge that the "forces of the universe" decide to throw at you. My aunt was diagnosed with the final stages of breast cancer, given 3 months to live. She laughed in the face of adversity. Now she has no breasts !!, no lymph glands and part of her liver has been removed.. but she is onto her last treatment of chemo. I have a friend who has Leukemia. He is many miles away, and all we have is e-mail (thank heavens for that) He is a very special guy, and his Leukemia is too far gone to do treatments. I know I will lose him in the next couple of months, and it is very hard. But our faith in God keeps us going!

Hi. Iwas daignosed with AML dec 99. At 23 yrs of age its the last thing you want to hear. While in hospital my father brought me in extracts of your site. It helped me a great deal. He didnt show me the more graphic details of course, but now that i read hem its scary how much they reflect my own experiences. Unfortunately my treatment lasted 6 months all of which i spent in an isolation room, except for a short vist to ICU and CCU. Now that my treatment is finished and i'm in total remission I am experi ncing strange side affects, off balance etc. I was wondering if this is the norm and if any other AML patients have experienced these. My doc's seem uncertain as to wether they will go away. If you could spare the time to reply I would be very gratful. If your too busy thats ok your site was well worht the visit. sonia (Dublin, Ireland).

It was diagnosed lased month that my son Snahasis Kundu, age around 21 years, has been suffering from CML ( chronic myeloid leukaemia ). I am quite shocked, what should I do ? Expenses I cannot afford. Even if I sell out my little assets and properties wh ch I am willing to do, funds will fall short. Medice treatment-hydrea- has already been started. They are thinking to add -interforn to be followed by chemotherapy and last bone marrow transplant with no guarantee of cure. Are you aware whether chord bloo can be safe substitute for BMT ? If I receive your initial comments I will disturb you with my further doubts and enquires. REgards.

She is also a breast cancer survivor of two years. You were ight when you said how quickly you learn about Leukemia from the Doctor's and Staff - they are all so wonderful and kind. Hi, dear Goran! I found your homepage is very encouraging and informatic. I am a student graduating this June and I was diagonized to have CML last April. Currently I am receiving inteferon therapy. But the blood check results seem to be too much volatile and recently both WBC and PLT increased beyond normal levels. Actually my brother qualifies as the donor but my family do not have enough money to afford BMT operation. Moreover, my doctor told me this operation only has about 70% of success. What should I do? Should I undergo this BMT or continue the inteferon therapy, which is also very expensive, until I run out of all the saving of my family? My parents are retiring and my brother is still in school. It seems from your homepage that the operation and sequently treatment until complete remission takes over one year! How is your donor doing now? Is s/he healthy. it has been a year and 4 months since I lost my nephew at the age of 23 from AML. I am glad you are a survivor and doing well. I wish you all the best in this life. I searched the net ever so often for information on leukemia and if there are any new adv nces. In part out of guilt to see if I might have missed something, if I could have done more. Dear Friend It is nice of you to share your experience with fellow patients. In my case I tried to find out some basic symptoms as a friend of mine had been given the scare by a doctor that she has Lekaemia. Two other doctors rejected the idea. As a nurse I could give her lots of medical type info, but I felt that pages printed from your website will be of more use to her. My 59 year old father was recently diagnosed with CLL. We are grateful that it is in the very early stages. It seems so strange though that the doctor tells us, "Your lucky to have caught it so early. Now let's wait until it gets worse to treat it." hat makes no sense to me. I was told that I had CLL 9 years ago. I have been treated with Kemo many times. I have never been in true remission but have had periods when I have gone with the Kemo for several months at a time. Considering all, I am not doing too bad. It has been a challenge over the past nine years but what would live be without a challenge once in awhile. The only thing that I can really say to anyone affected is that they must stay positive in their belief that they can win the fight. I honestly believe that if they truly believe then they have a good chance of winning. I was originally told that I ad a 50-50 chance of living for 5 years and no chance of living over 10 years. I beat the first set of odds and have another 10 months to go to beat the second one and I will make it. I started setting goals. Goals that were attainable but yet goals. When I would reach my goal I would set another one each time reaching out a little farther. As an example, my present goal is to make it to the year 2000. My first goal was to lif until Christmas 1990. Your Web Page was enjoyable and I am certain I will visit it from time to time. You are on target with one thing. You become very well educated on the subject once you are aflected. I have read books, pamplets, talked with various Doctors and grab ed at anything that would tell me about the subject. I too, am not a Doctor, but feel I know a lot more about the subject than most laypersons do. Keep up the good work.

Goran- You certainly are quite a character! No doubt you'll do well in theatre etc... My 36 husband was diagnosed with AML this past July...Ended up with double pneumonia, septic shock, lots of bad stuff...went into a spontaneous remission (only 18th e er documented case of this sort!!) Had operations to remove parts of his fingers and all of his toes as a result of vasopressers (sp?), he had just recovered from those operations when his Leukemia returned. He is now in New England Medical Center gettin a ten-day regimin of Chemo. My father-in-law was diagnosed with MDS (Myleodysplastic Syndrome) vs. AML about a month ago. He had four days of chemo last week. He was supposed to have five, but arrested on the oncology floor, and is now in the medical ICU, vented, weak, fighting in ections,etc. Our family was not at all prepared for this since he was so recently diagnosed. We go to see him every day. I work as a nurse in the hospital, fortunately, and get to see him more often then the others. I hope he goes into remission, and akes it over this rough time. Good luck to you. I never knew how difficult it was for someone with leukemia and their families. I have developed a new respect for visitors in the ICU setting. I am an ICU nurse.

Hi Goran, Found out yesterday that my best friend has been diagnosed with the same strain of Leukeamia that you had, and felt the need to read up about this scary disease so that I can speak to his wife with albeit limited knowledge. He went to find out the results of his tests and without further ado they stuck him in hospital. Thank you for your story. My friend is a very vital, active, sharp, funny 94 year old woman. Up until last week when her DR. told her to count her blessings, she has already beaten the odds by living to 94 and to pretty much pack it in. That really ups t me. She now is not eating and is pretty much giving up. I am trying to encourage her to eat, I've gotten her to take a little broth and I take her cookies (home made of course). Is there any hope for her? I know she is 94 but she is not your every d y "old lady". I wonder if I can donate my bone marrow to her. . I'll look into it, but they probably won't give it to her because of her age. That really sucks. In fact the whole disease sucks. I guess you would know that better than anyone. Sorry about that there are probably 2 entys for me i think i pressed the wrong button somewhere. I have also sent you an ICQ message that i hope you recieve but if you don't i will repeat myself here just in case. Where to begin this is Friday Dec 4 1998 and i found our mon that i have chronic Myelogonous Leukemia and well to say the least i am scared to death. On second thought that might be a bad choice of words, the doctors say that they are catching me very arly , i am not even having symtoms i just wanted to get a nutritional analisis and this is what i found out. I still am waiting to see the hemotologist for the second time and feel pretty useless, shouldn't i be doing something, my doctor has mentione that i will begin treatment with a drug called Intron A , if you know anything about this drug it would be great to know, I have read your sight from start to finish and must thank you very much for enlightening me and my husband it has been a scary wee and we still have so many questions but your page helped us alot, I really hope to hear from you i would love to know how you are doing right now. I think i could go on for hours but i am too tired the emotional rollar coaster has been exausting but ag in i thank you for your candor and great humour when dealing with something as serious as this. By the way, Dad is a farmer, after having spent 22 years in the U.S. Air Force, writing software (in the olden days) and 15 years at Union Pacific railroad (still more software). I am thankful to find such a web site as yours...it is very encouraging to me and I am sure to others. My situation is a little unique in that I have just recently fallen in love with a gentle-man, and as soon as we were to have our first face to face mee ing (we met on the internet!!!WOW!!!!) he was diagnosed with acute Leukemia. I ran to be with him for the one night we had together before he jumped a plane for the hospital in Minnesota (where he is from), we both reside in Fl. now, and I haven't seen hi since he left here that morning at 5:30a.m. It has only been 2 weeks since he left and he has been through chemo and waiting to see the results (remission please God!). We keep in touch through our friend the internet (God bless it), and there was a long period (FOREVER) that I didn't hear anything, he was sooooooo sick. My heart aches for him and cries about his suffering. He is a very special, wonderful man of 55, who enjoys life to the fullest and is health conscious to bout. He walks every day 3-5 mil s, watches the sun come up on the beach by his condo, rides a bike to town, eats well, doesn't drink or smoke.....and fell in love with me..........then BOOM!! Well, I can tell you right here and now HE WILL BE BACK TO HIS OLE SELF and soon. Neither God n r I are giving up on this man and if sheer will power and love are anything anymore...all will be well. So far he says his counts are climbing and he feels much better. Just waiting for now. I don't know what kind of leukemia he was told he had or exactly what they have told him because we haven't really had time to discuss it between us. I want to know "everything" and wait to hear from him about this. He has just the last couple of days, been able to write much, so I will know something soon I hope. Next step is the Bone Marrow Transplant. Going through this with Jason had made e realize how wonderful life really is. Just being able to walk, to breathe, to eat, and to laugh things that everyone usually takes for granted but they don't realize that God gave us the greatest gift of all. Thank you for a great web site. Those of us who have been through this know of your courage and spirit. My husband was diagnosed with AML in 4/95. Once in remission his doctor had the forsight to store his stem cells, yes it is a great procedure. One year later leukemia had returned and we were sent to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, lucky for us we live in Seattle. His transplant was 9/30/96. He had a great doctor from Australia - Dr. Morton. He did very well out of the hospital in 12 days with no hydration, didn't miss any meals but the disease and the treatment had taken its toll. He did well for 21 months and then it raised its ugly head again, he relapsed in May of 1998. WE have just finished chemo - 3 treatments and he is again in remission. This is the third time, he is 59 and has had many side effects but nothing that the medical field and modern drugs had not been able to handle. His hair is finally coming back after 2 1/2 years and so is his strength. We are in remission now and every day is a gift, that is why it is called the present. Our faith in God and trust in doctors has gotten us this far and his quality of life is good. He is now restoring a 1941 Plymouth and enjoying every minute of it. Thank you for your web site, we all need to talk about it once in a while,. As caregiver, we too need to talk about our feelings and problems too. Hi, Don't know why I picked your site, but here I am. I don't have leukemia. I am a writer and I am researching blood disorders/bone marrow doner/ etc. for a novel. My plot depends on some medical facts. My character who gets sick and needs a bone marrow ransplant is 60ish. Hi, I visited the site last year - right after my second relapse and now after my third I'm visiting again. I've had Acute Lymphocytic Leukaemia for 13 of my 18 years on the planet. I'm not sure whether I want to do anything about it this time - my body is still very weak from the last bout with cancer. My parents have left the decision to me and I know that if I choose not to treat it I have a life expectancy of no more than 5-6 months. I don't want to die but at the same time I'm so sick of always fi hting and never getting anywhere. Dear Goran, I am 22 years and have just learned that one of my best friends, Lisa Burnette, has been diagnosed with Leukemia. She and her husband Greg live in Georgetown, Texas, near Austin. She is currently a student at The University of Texas and is 2 years old. In about 10 minutes, she will be meeting with doctors to discuss the type of Leukemia she has, severity, treatments, etc. Unfortunately, not myself nor others in her family know much at all about the disease. One thing I do know is how sick chemo can make you...and I am very scared for her. I have been reading personal experiences of people diagnosed with the disease and most have been positive and comforting. I am trying to keep a positive attitude and am praying for the best. Fortunatel , Lisa has two brothers and a sister so the possibly of a tissue match from one of them is definately there. Your site is overflowing with info and very impressive. I am prepared to spend hours learning everything I can about the disease to pass the wor along. I would like to know from you, what was the most comforting advice or words you received from your friends or family which helped keep you strong... I want to do all I can to make this obstacle as easy(?) as possible for Lisa and Greg. Unfortuna ely, I cannot shower her with the hugs she needs for I am in Kansas many miles away. I just found out yesterday that my grandmother (81) has acute leukemia and doctor's have said she may only have about 3 weeks to live. I'm in shock and are very close to her. In helping my daughter,Nicol, update her research on leukemia in preparation for the Miss Mississippi Pageant, I found your site. Reading your story brings back a flood of memories of seeing my wonderful wife of 27 years, Diane, struggle in her courageou fight against AML. After seven months in the hospital, one remission , one relapse, and finally bone marrow transplant, she lost the battle on September 28, 1996. You probably know the term " Shake and Bake". Because of the intense medication Diane had to take for a liver infection developed during the process, severe chills came on, followed by high fevers (Shake and Bake). All the things you talk about are ingrained in my mind. I hope those who read this site, will be encouraged to know that with ev ry success, such as yours, and even every failure ,as in Diane's case, researchers are being given tiny keys to unlock the disease's mystery. You might pass along the fact that the bone marrow test does not have to be as painful as some doctors would hav you believe. Reading your story brings back a flood of memories of seeing my wonderful wife of 27 years, Diane, struggle in her courageou fight against AML. After seven months in the hospital, one remission , one relapse, and finally bone marrow transplant, she lost the battle on September 28, 1996. You probably know the term " Shake and Bake". Because of the intense medication Diane had to take for a liver infection during the process, severe chills came on, followed by high fevers (Shake and Bake). All the things you talk about are ingrained in my mind. I hope those who read this site, will be encouraged to know that with every succes , such as yours, and even every failure ,as in Diane's case, researchers are being given tiny keys to unlock the disease's mystery. You might pass along the fact that the bone marrow test does not have to be as painful as some doctors would have you beli ve. I wish now that I would have spent more time with him. If i could go back and do it ove I would have putt off school for a year and concentrated my time and energy on him. your website is a real uplifting thing to read. i have a very close friend with aml,who has been resistant to all chemo so far. diagnosed on march 9th and yesterday her blood work showed full blast again. she is 18yrs old. there are 6 matches for bmt but hey have'nt come forward yet let's hope and pray one come through quickly , even though she is not in remission, the bmt is about the only hope left, even experimental drug are not helping at all...i'm glad you are doing so well , i hope one day she will have the same success stories to tell you have.GOD BLESS YOU FOR ALL YOU HAVE BEEN THROUGH. I just found out that a friend of mine (actually an ex-girlfriend) has luekemia. We both go to school together and she is a good friend of mine. We are both engineering students at the univeristy of Wyoming. I care about her a lot. I don't really know hat to expect. I'm not sure what kind of Luekemia she has yet. I talk with her on the phone. Thanks for the "tip" regarding those cheerleading comments of how "you're going to be just fine." That's the first and LAST time I'll be saying that line. I never thought of how many phone calls my friend Brian might be getting on a daily basis and how ma y times he might be repeating the same phrases over and over again. Hello, Ive just stumbled upon your site, while staying in hospital with my boyfriend Lee Graham, who has acute lymphoblastic leukemia. We come from Hertfordshire in the UK. I havent read all of your site yet, but I fully intend to. Lee is still undergo ng treatment .he has relapsed after 6 months of treatment, and is now waiting to hear if he has a suitable donor abroad, as there is no match in the UK. I agree with your views on the lack of information on becoming a donor. So many friends of mine, kn w about the Antony Nolan register, yet dont have a clue about how relatively simple it is to save a life! Also, Ive seen a few UK news reports publicising the plight of a little boy of African origin, and his search for a donor. Great publicity, but non of the reports explained the procedure. Goran, Well, my brother in law is still in the hospital. He is stable, but he still feels "fuzzy". He is taking up to 36 mgs of morphine an hour along with other medications. Sunday, my Mom and I spent the day in his room, and he refused to fall aslee , b/c he was scared he would miss something. I'm so thankful we had that time to giggle about silly stuff. I took your advice. I just talked to him like I always have been, and it was like he didn't even have this awful disease. Those are memories I w ll cherish forever. Today, his mouth is numb and he is afraid to eat, b/c he's scared he will choke. My husband and I are going back in to Austin to visit this weekend. When the doctors said that this was an ugly disease, I didn't know what they were ta king about, until these last few weeks. I showed my parents your sight, and I think they wrote you. I have been involved in a leukaemia patients life, the patient was my mother, she had acute lymphblasic leukaemia for three years and is now recovering from a bone marrow and a hip replacement. Goran, I don't know if you will remember me or not, but I wrote you yesterday about my brother in law. I found out what kind of chemo they had him on. It was new and I asked you if you knew about it. I talked to my sister today and she said that they had him n topotekan ara-c (cytarbyne). That didn't work, so they started cytoxan today and that will take 5 days as well. The type of leukemia he has is CML. I also forgot to mention to you that he had his spleen taken out in February. It was so enlarged that it weighed 18 pounds. So, it is even harder for him to fight infection. Anyway, I know you are wondering who I am, but I hope you remember. So, if you could find any info on those types of chemos, that would be great. If you can't, I understand. Than s again for all you are doing. You are one incredible guy and it is no wonder why you are so special to your family. Thank you, Stephanie

I have a brother in law who was diagnosed with leukemia three months to the day after he married my sister in 1995. He has been in and out of the hospital and is in his final stage. He was rushed to the hospital the day before Easter and has been there ver since. They tried to give him a new kind of chemo. I don't know what it's called, but it has been known to bring patients back into remission. Do you know what this is? It is used on patients who have ovarian cancer. They have finished this five ay procedure, and are about to start it again. We have been getting little to none success. I guess I'm writing b/c I know my sister is about to lose her best friend and our family is about to lose one outstanding person. He is the neatest man I have e er met. I've never had to deal with death before this, and I have to tell you, it sucks. I hate it. Seeing as how you are the one who had to deal with loved ones looking at you and visiting you while you were in the hospital, do you have any advice for the visitors? I love Michael so much. I'm 17 and have been battling Acute Lymphocytic Leukaemia for the better part of the last 12 years. I can relate to a lot of your story. I've been in remission twice and hopefully it will last this time. I counsel other 'cancer kids' at the local hospi al and have a hard time trying to comprehend why these tiny souls have been given such a difficult task to overcome. It's one thing for me to go through it but it's entirely different for a 3 or 4 year old to have to. Leukaemia isn't choosy - it doesn't discriminate based on age, sex, or race. It randomly attacks and if you're one of the 'chosen ones' you have to dig in your heels and fight. This site doesn't glorify the disease but treats it with the respect that it deserves. Kudos.

Thanks so much. I'm a new 1st grade teacher and I'm doing a report on leukemia for a health class I'm taking. We have a little girl in 1st grade who has it. I also learned a lot about Chemo. My mom went through it for breast cancer last summer. I hav had thyroid cancer but was fortunate enough not to have anything but surgury and radiation. Good luck to you. hi o.k. i'm back the docters just confirmed that she has acute myloid leukaemia. what exactly is that?? that is what you had write? well i hope if it is she is as good as yo;u she is going into surgury at 10;00 tonight to get that hickman's line in becaa se they are starting kemo therapy tomarrow hr mom told my; mom that they are giving her really high doses and harsh one's because her leukaemia is really seriouse. i think i'm write but i don't know you can never fully recover from leukaemia just control it right?? like just get it down to a safe level if they do gt rid of it or what ever like make her good again will she live a long li;fe like sje would if she didn't have this or nno matter what this will shorten her life in some way. the docters said s e can't go back to school for the restr of the year :o( i miss her!) i gave her the adress for this sight so i think she mmight come hear in the future some time. i talked to her t;onight on the phone and she seemed fine and she said she is feeling teh b st she has in a long while she said it is probally the platelets they gave her this is kind of ironic because we just learned about all tis in health/gym class me and her were talking about this and how much it has helped her(and me) unserstand about plas a and platelets and white blood cells and why all this happens.i have a question if they give her a blood transfusion shouldn't that get rid of the leukaemia? because it is cancer of the blood. or does that just get rid of that but the blood goes through the entire body like the skin and stuff through the capillaries or arteriolies? so that's why they need the kimo to kill those cells to get rid of that part of leukaemia and then the bone marrow transplant (her brother is a match for her i think she said they just have to get rid of it in sections? is anything i just said right or am i completely lost? this is just what i think i don't really know the only stuff i know about leukaemia is the stuff on your web sight (a very good site a might add--even if hat i just said doesn't make sense you taught me alot) and what i learned from encarta(an encyclopedia) where do you live australia i think you said something about when you went home yo;u went to same place that is in leukaemia so i don't know if you mea t you went home then went there or on vacation or went there at home because that is where you live. so any ways you are such a great help to me you don't understand (i hope you do because i am very greatfull) and i hope to here from you soon and if i did 't ask can you explain what acute myloid leukaemia is and if you don't mind i will be writing yoiu back kinda frequently because you are the only person i know that knows anyhting about leukaemia and you lived what my friend is living through rite now. th nk you so much your very gretfull friend--Libby :o)

hi!! i am very thankfull for your sight yesterday my friends was taken to the hospital from a friends house at 12:00 i the morning the next thing we know she is in a majore hospital being diagnosed with leukaemia. this was so weird because she was fine an healthy actually for a couple days she has had a rash and a whole lot of bruises so her mom went and took her for a blood test and this is what they found we are only 14 years old i can't believe it this is so wierd i havn't talked to her yet because she is still in the hospital far away from where we all live but i am going to to go visit her with some friends on the weekend for her birthday. i printed out evrything your wrote on your web site and i am vry greatfull you took your time to share all this w th everyone i still don't understand why she got it. and how bad it all is going to be. today she is going for a bone marrow biobsy(I think) well something to do with a bone marrow test and i feel really bad for her i've been crying so much and i don't kn w what to do for her like act all happy or show her loads of sympathy or show her a great friendship to trust in. i just hope i can make her feel better. oh if you could please write me back and explain the difference in acute and chronic leukaemia becaus i think she has acute they mentioned something about bleeding alot and hemerages (like a rash..right???) well that is what she has and what i've seen i just can't believe two days ago i was running around two days ago playing handball one on one with her in gym comparring bruises from this dumb relay rtace thing we had to do on skkooters that killed the heck out of everyone and that night we all went out for coffee and walked around fort erie(a small city beside niagara falls) checking out hot guys (we ar girls--he...he...) so thank you for your sight it nade me feel sick for the pain she might have to go through but alot of hope in the long run cause before i read this i though there was no hope and everyone just died and the treatments were just for pro onging your life thanks again and please write me back---or anyone who reads this. love,Libby

Hi, it's brilliant to find your experiences of AML in the Web as I was helpless in getting the information about AML - my Dutch deaf partner has been diagonised with AML & pneumonia last week & I flew from England to Holland last weekend. Buckets of tears We are both deaf and cannot get full picture about AML from doctors & nurses. Only got sketchy info from the hearing relatives. My partner spoke little English & I had little Dutch, but we signed very fluently. My partner was too ill to sign & the Hickma 's get in the way (to wrist). Very glad to read your experiences. Thank You for your story. I will copy this for a freind of mind. Her Mother is on the death bed now of this disease. (Long Story) The daughter will recieve every page that is out. I am a friend and all of us have the same feeling. When it is time to go, Do not fight it. You will lose in the end. The only thing you can do is enjoy what you have for now. Eat what you want, drink what ou feel like. Try different things of food of what other people eat. Taste for yourself. It wont kill you, since you know what is going on already. I'm glad to hear you are in remission. I lost a little neice 5 years ago to Leukima she was only 7 years old and its very hard not a day goes by that our whole family doesn't think of her. Its a hard road so keep your head up and our prayers will be w th you always keep yourself healthy. A lot of times people don't know what to say or do but love and hugs and kindness goes a long way and just being there is a big help. I think what bothers me the most is that i wasn't always there. I encourge everyo e out there to be a bone marrow donar and be there when you are needed. God Bless You!!!

I am doing a report for school on Leukemia and that is why i read your pages. But I am so glad I did because I found out plenty if things on it. Yes, I already knew thngs, but reading what you wrote help me see things from your point of view. As a fourtee year old teen I like to eat junk food. But now I think I should rethink my diet. My aunt had died of Leukemia when she was eight, so I had never gotten ro meet her. I just wish that they had these kinds of treatments a long time ago, and maybe other liv s could have been saved such as yours. I am terrifed of getting Leukemia, because I know I could not be as stong as you were, but if it does ever happen to me I hope I could atleast try to be half of the strength that you were. Thanx for a terrific sto y ( of real life ) And I am sure that you help people give hope with what you have written. Good Luck in the future. I hope you stay well and have a great wedding. I'm from New Brunswick Canada and I am trying to get as much information on leukemia as I can. An uncle of mine was just diagnosed with acute leukemia one week ago and has already begun with chemotherapy. I'm trying to be as supportive of him and his fa ily as possible, therefore, I need to know what we are dealing with. Thanks for the information and good luck in your continued remission. I am very proud that you survived leukemia. The reason I looked at your shonky work is that me and a few of my amigos have to do a HUGE report on the desease. Good luck in your future. My brother in law just rec'd a letter from the hospital telling him to come in straight away for one week of chemo followed by three weeks of resting and monitoring. I was very impressed with your website. My grandmother has been diagnosed with pre-Leukemia symptoms. I was searching for info on the web when I happened upon your site. I'm also a friend of good ole Loriann and we've been corresp nding via email while I was in the hospital (Yes the box was in the room!). It sounds like you did exactly what I did; ripped every bit of info out of every source I could. It's the only way I dealt with it. That and an extremely crass sense of humor.
