Mystery Ancestors

Do any of these belong to you?

Over the years I've collected far more information than I thought possible! My Uncle recently sent me these photos (some of them reproductions of tintypes!). Among them are some folks we can't identify.
If you see someone here that you know let's solve the puzzle together. Just click on Sil's name below in the Web Master block and send a quick email. She loves to get mail - really she does!!

Wado, Hawk

"Euel Holman and family".
Wife appears Native American, at least in part. Have no name for wife or children, no idea how Euel connects to the family except that he's related to Lolar Tackett Holman, my g-grandmother, who married a William T. Scott Jr. Speculation suggests he's Lolar's brother, but we have yet to find supporting evidence beyond the period indicated by the style of the clothing. He could have been born at such a time as to be a sibling.
(NOTE: While Lolar's mother appears to be at least part Native American, Lolar herself shows no sign of it. The physical characteristics are strong in her children, however, due in large part to her husband being part Cherokee and probably part Seminole as well.

This little sweetie is known to us as Herman. His Mama's name is Emma and they were living in Vinita OK in 1920.

We have no idea who this person is. We know she must be family because my grandmother kept this photo of her. It's possible that her name was Nannie (Myres?) and that she's of German/Native American parentage.

This fellow is identified on the back of his photo as Mr. Parks. When looking at the original, one can see that he was probably a redhead with blue or green eyes. We think he may have been married to this next lady.

A name scribbled on the back indicates that her first name was "Molly" (which probably means her given name was actually Mary). Two surnames are also on the back, but give no firm indication of her connection to either name. These surnames were Parks and Resinbarow, as near as we can make out. She is quite dark in the original photograph, but appears to have had light brown or possibly dark gray or green eyes.

We have not a clue at all about this girl! The photo was taken in a Missouri studio, and she appears to be dressed according to the style of the late 1880's. Though it's not visible in this copy, in the original, one can see that she has a "lazy eye".

One of these lovely Edwardian-era ladies (we don't know which one)is named Maude Holman. We don't know if that's her maiden or married name. The other two (we can't tell which!) are simply noted on the back of the photo as "mother" and "sister". The first we are aware of our Holmans with any certainty, they are living in Jacksboro, Texas. Some, or perhaps most of them shortly moved to the BlueJacket/Fawn/Vinita regions of Indian Territory, Cherokee Nation.

This appears to be a later photograph of ANS1, Euel Holman. The woman beside him is said to be his wife (no name given); I question if this is the same woman as in the earlier photograph. The fellow on the other side is noted as "a friend".

We don't have a clue about this fellow. He could be a Romines, a Scott, a Boucher... it's anyone's guess at the moment. This is a tintype, taken in the mid-1860's. Given my family's migration patterns, I expect it was taken either in Kentucky or Tennessee.

This unhappy- looking lady is dressed in the fashion typical during the War Between the States, so we assume it was probably taken sometime at the height of that period. Again, we can't even begin to guess at her identity. It's possible that she's a Holman or Boucher, but this is only a guess.

We believe this lady may be Nancy or Nannie Myres, a Cherokee/German woman who married William Taylor Scott (Sr) in Kentucky. At this time, however, we have no way of confirming this belief. This picture is from a tintype, the cut of her dress indicating that it was taken in the mid-1860's, possibly just after or at the tag-end of the War Between the States. I estimate her to have been in her early 20's at this time.

FONT SIZE="+1" FACE="Lucida Calligraphy">Here's a fun one. This fellow's name is Roy Coons. This photo was on a postcard sent to my gg-grandfather, William Taylor Scott when he was living in Kansas City, Kansas. We don't know if he's a relation or a friend of William's. The writing on the back is too blurred to read.

FONT SIZE="+1" FACE="Lucida Calligraphy">These little guys are supposedly the children of "Uncle Brutus" and "Maudie". It's thought that Brutus may be a Ridenhour and Maudie a Dugger. The boy on the far left looks pure mischief to me ;)

Grandmother Bessie's
Mystery Cousins

My Grandmother (Bessie Leona Romines Scott), who will be 102 years of age on November 12, 1998 made lists in her younger years. In notebooks, on scraps of paper, she wrote lists of names under the heading of "FAMILY". Unfortunately, with but a few exceptions, she never indicated what the relationship was between herself and these individuals, or what the relationship between the various individuals was. I think, based on what I've been able to learn so far, that in most cases the first person listed was a parent, the second name a spouse if known. However, for various reasons I'm convinced that these people were Grandmother's Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.

Please scan the names below; you may find someone you know or someone you're looking for. If you find someone, please drop a line to me Red Hawk or Webmaster Sil.

Wado!

It is safe to assume that almost all of these individuals spent at least a portion of their lives in Oklahoma, most probably in or near BlueJacket or Vinita. Dates of birth most likely span the years between 1880 and 1920. They would, in one way or another, be associated with the surnames

ROMINES, SCOTT, BOUCHER, HOLMAN, TACKETT, DUGGER, HICKMAN, HASTINGS, STILLIE (or STILLY) or DURBIN.

HENLY (or HENLEY)

Hezekiah, George, Kenneth, Emmit (or Emmet), Prentis, Marvin

PATTY

John, Pearl, Elmer, Irene, Bobby

LEWIS

Willy (this could be a woman or a man's nickname for William), Gertie, Dorothy, Glen, Elmer, Virgil, Harold

AYRES

Ella, Effie, John, Maude, George, Hezekiah

ROBERTSON

Gwenneth, Justin

PEARSON

"Cousin Carrie" (I suspect, but can't prove, that Carrie was nee DUGGER), Charlie, Franc (or possible Frane), Mary

RAPER

Dewit C. (we think he married a MITCHELL), Clay, Grace, Fred

MITCHELL

George, Clay, Ross, Drew (entered in 1920 Craig Co census as Foreman D.), Joe, George Jr.

LUCKEY

Paulene (Luckey may be her married name; she may be a Holman.)

[This family is proven to be connected to the surnames HILDEBRAND, FOREMAN and HORN, all Dawes Roll families; what we haven't yet discovered is the connection between this line and my core family line. We can't find the person who ties it all together.]

Note: I have found some of these individuals in various locations (most particularly census records...all in Oklahoma) but I have not been able to connect them with my core family names. The connection exists, but continues to elude me. If you can find the connection, both our family trees will grow many new branches.

Thank you for taking the time to visit my Mystery Ancestors page. Please visit again, as this page will continue to be updated as new data presents itself.
