My husband has a gall stone. They want to remove his gall bladder. But he recently had a pulmonary emboli and is currently taking coumadin. While waiting in the hospital I read an article on lithotripsy and saw that this procedure can be used on gall ston s. Since this procedure would not involve cutting I'm wondering if it would be better for my husband. They say there is only one stone and it is too large to go into the ducts. Is this procedure safe? Would you recommend it for this situation? He's never ad a history of gall stones. They found this stone when he was admitted for chest pain and a probable heart attack. Debbie Blakely

I have had stones for 20 years I'm now 40 and recently lost my right kidney it's still there but dead a stone had blocked my tube and I didn't know that it had quit working I'm having a lot of infections and the Dr. is waiting to see if the kidney will sh ink and go away or if it has to come out my "good kidney" is only 80% and is full of stones they are oxlate and yes I have had the litho 4 times and it is so much better than surgery which I have had and the litho is a life saver.

Had this procedure twice. Not kicking out much stones. X-ray shows stone....maybe beatup some but I wonder?? A pretty good size stone & understand that it is a factor. I have had Lithotripsy before, in 1991, but did not like part of the procedure. This urologist used a stent following the procedure which be then had long gone out of practice, or so I was told by my currect urologist. I have developed another stone and expect lithotripsy will be the suggested treatment. My question is who makes the latest equipment and where in the US can it be located. I did come across a note stating that a hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, US has one of the most current units requiring no anesthesia or bath. Can you confirm this with possibly more details. I have passed one stone and know that there is another one that was still in my right kidney in December. I think that the stone is starting to move because I am starting to hurt again. I am supposed to go back for an xray in June if I haven't passed it b then and the doctor will decide if it is large enough to remove. My fiance has chronic problems with kidney stones. He passes at least 2 per month. He is in constant pain, but the doctor says that his stones are only 2 - 3 cm or mm, I'm not sure in size. I just heard about lithotripsy in the last several days. I was found to have stone 7.4 which is lodged in the bladder. The pain was excruciating, but since it went into the bladder I have not had any pain. I am due to have the lithotripsy in 2 weeks. Th urologist said it too large to pass. Your information has been a great help to me and has made me feel more at ease. I cannot go to the special unit which has the stronger machine because my insurance will not cover the costs at that particular medical center, so I have to go to a Major Hospital. The machine at this hospital is not as strong the urologist said, so I ma have to have it done twice. Once is enough for me. They will put me out completely. I am quite familiar with the lithotripsy machine having had 11 of them.I have had kidney stones 13 times and know what a problem they can be and how much pain they can and do cause.At this time I am going through a proceedure called a percutanious nephros omy because my stones are to large to break up sufficiently with a lithotriptor.I had nephrostomy tubes put in on Nov.15 1999 and the stone was to large for the doctor to get out so since then I have also had a lithotripsy to break it up smaller so he can possibly remove the remainder of the stones through the nephrostomy tubes on the 31st. of Jan.2000 If not then I have to have another lithotripsy to break them even smaller so he can then possibly remove them.It's a very long process and I have formed sev re urinary tract infections twice during this time period.So when you talk about kidney stones I can relate to what you are talking about.Any discussion you would like to have about my experience with stones I would be more than happy to do so.I live in O ala Florida,USA

I was treated last month as ESWL level 2 with DJS insertion, and at the end they did URS also. But it was also a painful treatment. I dont know about the open surgery but it was really a new experience for me. The procedure is been done by Dr. Raziuddin B abani at Aga Khan Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan. The complete procedure took 24 days. which is very long period for a working man. Is it possible to make this short. Will be waiting for your reply..

I had a basket retrieval of a pea sized kidney stone lodged in the right ureter just above the bladder on 10/6/98. I believe this particular procedure was done because I was 20 weeks pregnant at the time. i am a 30 year old female. my stone was 2cm x 3cm. my doctor said that that was a fairly large stone. we somewhat credited it's rapid growth due to being pregnant and taking prenantal vitamins during my pregnancy. my stone was mostly based of calcium. i just had the procedure done on november 12 1999. i had some complications afterwards that have really bothered me. severe pain, the day after, and nausea and vomiting after that for the next two days, and nausea still. today is november 18. my doctor al owed me to remove my own double j stent to see if that would help, i did so, BUT ONLY UNDER HIS AUTHORITY. with in minutes the pain started to diminish and i passed a couple of larger fragments. we think the nausea and vomiting was cause from being un er anesthitic and compounded by my painkillers. and it still hurts severely when urintating. but hopefully that will pass soon. but other than that my out come looks very good, the stone shattered "beautifully", as my doctor put it!!! now i'm hoping t at this will never happen again, but if it does, i would do it all over again so as not to have the kind of pain that i had before the procedure. i was terrified of the procedure and the after affects at first, but it is a wonderful option. i was able t go home that day, i wasn't able to take care of my 4 month old baby, but with help from my parents (husband was working) everything seems to have turned out great. i don't think that i would ever take to other option of the doctors cutting my back open o have it removed. sorry, that i'm babbling, but it really has been an interesting experience!!!

My mom has had a problem with stones for over a year now. Shes had the sound waves done twice and has just found out she has them again but in the other kidney. She has a better diet than most people could ever imagine and has had a lot of problems gett ng treatment for she has no medical insurance. I've been trying to do some research to find out more information but keep running in circles. They put a bag into her kidney and has had it for several months now. She was told by one doctor that in his 3 years of being a urologist he has NEVER seen any as bad as hers.

My uncle is suffering from kidney stones and he asked me to find out more about his Lithotripsy. He had just had it done a week ago and he is still suffering from alot of pain but he has passed all his "stone fragments". He is now scared that he could hav a kidney infection or that something went wrong. The problem is he still has 4 more left, one on his left and 3 on his right. Was diagnosed with stones about 3 weeks ago but for a while it was thought they passed. No such luck. Went to the my local hospital's ER twice now for pain. Percocet and Hydrocodone just didn't do anything to alleviate the pain. (they started out with he hydrocodone then graduated me to percocet). Had my IPV today, should be hearing from my doctor tomorrow. He will probably refer me to a urologist. Can't wait till this is over. Dennis

I have had a kidney stone myself when I was 20 yrs old ( I am 21 now). I had Lithotripsy done to rid of the stone and it worked great. My stone completely vanished and I am trying to prevent them now so I do not get another. It was rather large ( about th size of a Peanut M&M ). It was very painful and hope I do not get another. my brother had lithotripsy for kidney stones Oct 2, had stent taken out on oct 5, he started hurting and he had swelling, then had bladder spasms, then had blood clots coming out. Today every time he urinates, he is blleding. He is at the doctor now. What could be the problem? Curious.

I have had 2 stones via litho,,,can you tell the type of stone you have just blasted...by the way the stone reacted to sound waves..re:calcium oxalate monohydrate stone vs calcuim oxalate dihydrate stone???

I have had this procedure done once and it did not work. I ended up back in the hospital to have the scope run. I do not believe this is for me but I am glad I tried it once. I had 4 stones within the past year and had this procedure once and the scope twice. I have a hard time passing stones and this is why I feel this is not for me.
