November 17, 2000:  Toyland Show at Shooters

December 1, 2000:  World AIDS Day & Day Without Art

Cincinnati--The thirteenth observance of World AIDS Day will be commemorated on Friday, December 1, 2000. Locally the events for World AIDS Day will take place at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Court Place & York, Newport, Kentucky. A reception will be held at 6:30 PM and the observance will take place from 7:00 - 8:00 PM. The featured speaker will be Courtis Fuller, WLWT-TV News Anchor. The observance will be followed by Day Without Art also at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church from 8:00 – 9:00 PM and will feature artwork relevant to HIV/AIDS. Students from St. Rita’s School for the Deaf will participate in the program by featuring its Signing Choir as well as student art.

Limited transportation to the event is available at the following locations: CCHB, 528 Maxwell Ave in Corryville (behind Firstar on University Ave), AVOC, 2183 Central Parkway. The vans will leave the above locations at 6:00 p.m. Call EPIP at 961-9930 to sign up for transportation.

Organizations involved in the World AIDS Day Planning Committee include: Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, St. Elizabeth Medical Centers, Greater Cincinnati AIDS Consortium, AIDS Volunteers of Northern Kentucky, HIV/AIDS Ministry Team, Cincinnati Health Department/ODH, AIDS Volunteers of Cincinnati, American Red Cross, Northern Kentucky Health Department, Inner City Health Care, CCHB/EPIP, GCAC Pastoral Care Committee, Planned Parenthood, Minority AIDS Prevention Alliance, Community Advisory Board and Caracole.

The World AIDS Day Planning Committee urges all of our surrounding communities to participate in this special day by ringing bells 20 times at 2:00 PM signifying 20 years of the epidemic and by participating in the service. If you cannot participate in these activities, please dim all lights in your house or place of business from 7:45-8:00 PM.

This year’s World AIDS Day theme is "AIDS—Make A Difference." The focus is an open communication about HIV/AIDS, with an emphasis on education, prevention and change. The theme addresses the following:

Ending the silence by discussing HIV and sexuality openly, dispel myths, and reduce the stigma that surrounds HIV/AIDS.
Learning from one another about respect, support, and protection from HIV

One hundred ninety one countries around the world are observing this day to draw attention to the AIDS epidemic. World AIDS Day will link communities throughout the United States in a unified observance when the White House dims its lights from 7:45 to 8:00 PM. This visual demonstration will signify the commitment to fight the AIDS pandemic and will give tribute to people living with HIV/AIDS and to those who have died from AIDS.

December 3, 2000:  AVNK Cut-A-Thon at Crazy Fox Saloon

NEWPORT, KY - Hair stylists from all over the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati area will converge on Crazy Fox Saloon, 901 Washington Street (corner of Washington and 9th Street), Newport, Kentucky from 12 Noon to 7 PM to participate in AIDS Volunteers of Northern Kentucky Seventh Annual Cut-A-Thon & Holiday Bazaar Fundraiser. Massage and reflexology will also be available. So if you are interested in a great holiday haircut or a great holiday gift, come on down.

August 26, 2000: 6th Annual African-American Heritage Festival

The African-American Heritage Festival has been sponsored by AVNK for the last three years. The Heritage Festival is an outdoor cultural fair which has a strong emphasis on community and health. A number of booths are made available to health care agencies. Our goal is to attract and educate 250 African-American individuals on issues ranging from HIV/AIDS, to Hepatitis C, to Sickle-Cell Anemia. The secondary purpose is to develop a stronger sense of community. Entertainment and refreshments are made available. There is no admission fee to attend the Heritage Festival.

The 6th Annual Northern Kentucky African-American Heritage Festival will be held on Saturday, August 26 at Randolph Park (9th & Prospect below Greenup Street) in Covington, Kentucky. The hours are from Noon until 9 p.m. This family oriented (non-alcoholic) event is suitable for all ages and cultures. There will be historical displays and live entertainment, including poetry, jazz, R&B and spiritual music. Health care providers will also be present with information focusing on education about diseases that are high risk to the African-American population.

March 25-28, 2000:  AIDS Watch 2000

AVNK's Bill Siller will once again travel to Washington, D.C. as part of a national effort to educate U.S. Senators and Representatives on HIV/AIDS issues.  Contact Bill Siller with any concerns or issues you would like our elected officials to hear.

May 12-14, 2000:   AVNK Healing Weekend V

AVNK will sponsor its fifth annual Healing Weekend at the Marydale Retreat Center in Erlanger, Kentucky.  The AVNK Healing Weekend provides a number of workshops on various complementary therapies such as massage, reflexology, grieving, reike, herbal remedies.  The Healing Weekend also permits networking of those living with HIV/AIDS with each other and with caregivers.   If you would like to help plan the Healing Weekend, please contact Linda Ochs for a schedule of planning meetings.
