RUSSELL IRA CROWE was born on April 7, 1964, in Strathmore Park (a suburb of Wellington), New Zealand. He lived there until the age of four when his parents, Alex and Jocelyn Crowe, moved him to Australia. His parents were set caterers, and Russell grew up on sets and around a lot of stars. He has called himself not a child actor, but a child extra. At age six, Russell appeared on the Aussie show Spyforce, and at age twelve, he appeared in The Young Doctors. At age fourteen, Russell returned to New Zealand to finish school. In his early 20's, he did about 415 performances of The Rocky Horror Show. He played Dr. Frank N. Furter among other roles. Russell joined the Australian cast upon his return to Sydney. He has also appeared in Blood Brothers, Simpson J. 202, and the offficial Tribute to the Blues Brothers (1993). |
Russell got his middle name from his great uncle, Ira Cunningham. Director George Ogilvie (The Crossing) persuaded Russell to have the tooth that was knocked out in a football game when he was 10 replaced. Russell is an avid guitar collector, and sings lead vocals in the Aussie folk rock band 30 Odd Foot Of Grunts. Russell is very quiet about his personal life, however, he is currently single, has never been married, and has no children. He lives on a farm in Australia with his parents, older brother Terry, and numerous animal friends. Russell has been in over 20 movies. He won the Australian Film Institute Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Proof, and the Best Actor award for Romper Stomper. He was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in The Insider. Russell has also been nominated for a Golden Globe, a SAG award, an Academy Award, and a BAFTA award for Best Actor in Gladiator. He was also named Showest Man of the Year!
