In his early 20's, Russell toured with The Rocky Horror show while he lived in New Zealand.  He joined the Australian cast upon his return to Sydney.   Russell also appeared in Blood Brothers, Simpson J. 202, and The Official Tribute to the Blues Brothers (1993).

At age 6, Russell appeared in the Australian television show Spyforce.  At age twelve, he appeared in The Young Doctors, a  show which appealed to mostly younger viewers.  As an adult, Russell was in Police Rescue (1990), and he had a role in the miniseries The Brides of Christ (1991), which premiered on Australian ABC.
