My bingo bag pattern is similar to these bags, especially the one on the right. |
Cloth Bingo Bag Pattern (Moderate to difficult to make) One Large coffee can plastic lid and batting the size of the inside of the lid to stablize it. Bag Outside: Cut 2 - 12 1/4" x 13" cloth pieces Bag Inside/Lining: Cut 1 - 24 1/4" x 13" cloth piece Pockets: Cut 1 - 26 1/2" x 6" piece (Cut 2 if you want to line the pockets) Pocket size: you will determine by sewing 3 3/4" to (4") apart. Pocket size has to be large enough for daubers to fit into. For Unlined pockets: turn one edge of long side over 1/4'' twice and stitch, then gather other long side. For Lined pockets: sew right sides facing (outside & lining), long sides together along one edge. Turn, and press close to stitching. You may wish to top stitch. Then with both back sides touching, gather together as one piece across other long bottom side; less than 3/8". Outside bag sides: stitch 10" from bottom of bag, leave a (1") OPEN SPACE, then sew the rest of side up. Sew the same on the other side. (Note: The 1" opening will be the drawstring area.) Lining: fold in half long wise, right sides facing each other. Stitch completely up the side. *When you get ready to sew the lining to the outside of bag, place the side stitch so it isn't next to the outside seams. Outside bag piece: press side seams open. Then top stitch all around the opening on both sides. *This will be the hole where the drawstrings come thru. Pocket placement: Pin & baste pocket(gathered edge) to bottom side of outside bag. The good side will be showing both for the bag and the pocket. You will be placing it exactly like you will be looking at it when it is done. Then measure and place pins to mark where you will stitch the pockets for placement of seams between pockets. Spacing them evenly around the bag. The pockets will not be laying flat because of the extra material and gathering of it. So use good judgement. After you have pinned evenly around the bag, then stitch from pocket edge toward gathered edge at each marked and pinned spot around. Sew lining to outside bag: with right sides facing, pin and sew top edges of bag together, making sure lining side seam is NOT next to outside bag seams. Turn and press. Top stitch around the top of bag. Drawstring area: Just above the hole opening for the drawstring. Stitch all around the bag evenly from the top edge. Then do the same thing below the opening for the drawstring. This makes the area to keep the strings in. Bottom of Bag Stablizer: On paper: Trace the top of a large coffee can plastic lid. 19 1/2" around. Then add 1/4" all around the circle for seam allowance. (3/8") Trace the lid on batting and place the batting inside the plastic lid. You may hot glue if you would like, but not necessary. Now use the pattern you just made and cut 2 pieces out. The lining material would be the best to use since this will be on the inside of the bag. With right sides together, stitch a little over half the way around, not too far, you will need to put the plastic lid with the batting in it inside this material. You will have to hand stitch this together. This will give you a nice sturdy bottom for your bingo bag. MAIN Bottom of bag: Cut a 24" around circle out. I would measure around any round container until you found that size. I had a plastic bowl that size to trace around on a piece of paper for a pattern. You could always cut a piece of string 12" long, place a pin on one end and stretch out and slowly go around with a pencil or pen to make the circle(this takes longer). Sew bottom on bag: Turn the bag with the lining attached, inside out. Pin, right side of bottom and outside bag facing, Easing: Baste together (lining, outside bag, pockets, & bottom). Making sure the gathering of pockets and bag outside and lining inside pieces aren't bunched. If this looks good, stitch together. You can zig zag stitch, overcast stitch, or use pinking shears to cut around the edges of this bottom seam. Turn the bag back. Place the bottom of bag stablizer piece into the bottom of the bag. Drawstring: You can use a rope like the ones in the pictures above. Cut 2 pieces: 52-54" long. What works the best is to use a large safety pin on one end and weave that around inside of drawstring area, until it comes back out the same side and tie. Now on the opposite side, weave the other string around until it come out that same side and tie. When you pull on both ties, it should draw the bag up closed. OR You can (cut 2) 54 1/2" long x 1 1/2" wide material and fold in half (right sides facing) sew on one short end and across long edge. Turn and press. Fold in open end 3/8" and sew, closing end. |
