No-Bake Salt Dough Ornament Recipe

3 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups corn starch
1/2 cup salt
1 1/2 cups very hot water
1 tblsp glycerine or vaseline

Mix flour and corn starch.  Combine water, salt, and glycerine until salt is dissolved.  Add flour and starch mixture to liquid mixture, mix until it clumps.  Form into a ball, then knead for 5-10 minutes until smooth.  *Once complete, place dough in a plastic bag so it doesn't dry out.

Form ornaments.  When connecting, braiding, layering pieces, coat them with water, this will act as a glue.  Insert hanging hook or ribbon while dough is soft.  Let dry 2-3 hours before coating, adding decorations, or painting.  To make them last a long time:  coat with acrylic varnish when everything is dry-completely.

Salt Dough Recipe #1

4 cups of flour
1 cup of salt
1 tsp of dry mustard
1 1/2 cups of water

Mix all ingredients together.  It should be just like play dough but if it is a bit dry, just add a LITTLE more water, keep mixing till the consistency is like play dough.  (The warmth from your hands will help it mold together)  If the dough is sticking to your hands, then it is too wet, you will have to add a bit more flour.

Once you have this mixture just like play dough, you are ready to make some ornaments.  Clean off the counter, or table, and spread about 3 tblsp of flour on it.  Take a piece of the dough (about the size of a baseball) and then sprinkle some flour on top of it.  Now roll out the dough with a rolling pin about 1/3 inch thick (you can decide what you think from the way your cookies turn out on the first sheet.).

Then take your favorite cookie cutters and make the ornaments you want.  Use a straw to make the holes for the ribbons to hang them.  Be careful not to mess up the outline when you pick them up to put them on a cookie sheet!  They will bake at 200 degrees for 2 hours.  You'll have to check them, maybe they will need a bit longer.  (This depends on how thick they are plus all ovens are different.)

Once they are cooled, you can paint them any way you like.  A lot of people like them natural looking, without paint.  After you have painted them the way you like, you must now varnish them to be able to keep them forever.  Use polyurethane and brush it on with a sponge brush.  Do one side of all the pieces and let that dry.  The next night, do the other side.  Three good coats will be fine.  Letting them dry overnite in between each coat.  Now all you have to do is put a ribbon or raffia (present wrapping ribbon with the lines in it) through the hole for a hanger. (When coating, be careful that you are not filling in the hole you have made for the hanger)  Make a bow and they are ready to decorate the tree.

*These are great for baby showers too. Use the gingerbread boy and girl and put a blue ribbon on neck for the bowtie for a boy or pink ribbon on hair for a girl.  You can also use this idea to make plaque wall hangings for a childs room, such as a angel or bear, etc...  The possibilities are endless!
Salt Dough Recipe #2

2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water

Mix salt and flour.  Add in half the water, then gradually add the remaining water.  Knead until the dough is smooth, this can take up to 10 minutes.  For flat dough ornaments, roll out the dough on baking paper or be creative and make odd shapes and wreaths (takes longer to bake).

Use cookie cutters, cut-out templates, or just use your hands to make shapes.  Dust dough with flour and begin to add details to the ornaments wigh a toothpick, popsicle stick, and/or knife.  Use a straw to make a hole so you can hang the ornament.  Baking time varies based on thickness of ornament.  Bake at 325 degrees 1 1/2 hours or until dry.

Let cool before you begin to paint.  Paint with acrylic pants. Glue on beads, buttons, or any fun accessory.  You can make them last a long time by coating with acrylic varnish when everything is completely dry.

Color Variations:  Substitute coffee for water, great for gingerbread people.  Add food coloring to make dough a unique color.
