HOUSTON LIEDERKRANZ NEWSLETTER January - February 2009 |
|
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:
Happy New Year to everyone. I guess you can still say it, even though it is already the middle of January 2009. The Houston Liederkranz had a very good year with a successful Saengerfest in
New Braunfels and a wonderful trip to Germany, visiting four different singing clubs, renewing contacts and in general meeting old and new friends. The Hall Rental business was also very
profitable and supported our finances. Some of our functions lacked attendance for various reasons, but provided entertainment and fun. On behalf of the Houston Liederkranz I would like to
thank everyone who made these events run smoothly and successfully. From the choir director to the bar chairman, the Hall Rental director to all the big and little helpers, the board appreciates
a job well done!! Now, this is a new year, new challenges and new board (luckily most of the board stayed on). There will be another Saengerfest in Austin, functions (KaffeeKlatsch, masquerade
ball, singing engagements, etc) and of course financial issues. To keep the Liederkranz alive and well, even more emphasis will have to be put on volunteering. I would like to see at least
two members working on some of the upcoming events. PLEASE VOLUNTEER1111 I envision smaller working groups attacking various building issues. Please don't be discouraged; remember that a club
is only as good as its membership support! Let us have a positive outlook, show up for singing and all the functions……..and stay happy and healthy
Joachim

Concert Tour to Germany in September 2008 Forty-six members of the Liederkranz Mixed Choir and
the Shanty Choir were welcomed by host families in Wolf/Traben-Trarbach on the Mosel, Neu Wulmstorf (near Hamburg), and Cottbus on the Polish border with concerts presented in collaboration with
host organizations in each locale. The Wolf Freiwillige Feuerwehr Blas Orchestra, de Windjammer Shanty Chor, Lied Hoch, and Stroehbitzer Trachtentanz Gruppe all arranged delightful welcome
meals, comfortable accommodations, venues for singing as choirs and with our hosts. Sight seeing tours were arranged with some surprise events. Cruises were made on the Rheine, Mosel, Elbe,
Spree, Moldau Rivers and the Hamburg harbor. The hospitality, organization, and generosity of the host families will remain in these Liederkranz memories for many years to come. Thank
you!!!!!!!!!!!! **************************************** PHOTO HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS TRIP WILL BE SHOWN AT THE KAFFE KLATSCH ON JANUARY 25 AT 3:00PM. JOIN THE GROUP TO REMINISCE. **************************************** No food
preparation or clean up of food/dishes is to be done in the Houston Liederkranz kitchen.
**************************************** MEMBERSHIP DUES FOR 2009 are now due. Please pay $35 per
person for annual dues to Cathy Austin, Treasurer. Cathy can be reached at 713-252-6727
**************************************** HOUSTON LIEDERKRANZ HALL The hall continues to require
replacement of old equipment and repair of existing facilities. During 2008 a new soft drink cooler and wine cooler was purchased for the bar, thanks to some generous donations. Also
one air conditioning unit had to be replaced. To meet City of Houston requirements a cover was built around the waste dumpster by members. A very generous donation was received from the
Liederkranz 2008 travel fund to help defray our tax obligations. Work needs to be done in the restrooms and the roof in 2009.
