To run the System Restore utility from DOS, perform the following steps:

1. Boot to MS-DOS with CD-ROM support using either a Windows Startup floppy or the Dell Resource CD.

2. At the A: prompt, type c: and press the <Enter> key.

3. At the C: prompt, type edit c:\windows\system.ini and press the <Enter> key.

The MS-DOS Editor screen appears.

4. Edit the shell= line so that it reads as follows:

shell=progman.exe

5. Press the <ALT>+<F> keys at the same time and then press the <S> key to save the changes to the System.ini file.

6. Press the <ALT>+<F> keys at the same time and then press the <X> key to exit the MS-DOS Editor.

7. Remove your Windows Me Startup disk or Dell Resource CD, and then restart your system.

The Program Manager utility appears.

8. Click the File menu, click Run, type msconfig in the Command Line box, and then press the <Enter> key.

9. Click Launch System Restore to begin restoring your computer to a previous, functional state.

NOTE: After you configure the system to start Program Manager, an alternate way to start the System Restore tool is to type c:\windows\system\restore\rstrui.exe at a command prompt and then press the <Enter> key.

10. Once the restore is complete, the system may continue to reboot into the Program Manager utility.

If this occurs, repeat steps 1 to 3 and then edit the shell= line in the system.ini file as follows: shell=explorer.exe

11. Repeat steps 5 to 7 to save the changes and reboot the system.

Upon reboot, the system boots to the Windows Me Desktop.
