Peter Hallock of Southold, Long Island, NY
Peter Hallock is the subject of intrigue by those researching the family of Richard Howell of Southold, Long Island, New York. According to tradition, Peter sailed to the new world in the early 1600's and migrated to the New Haven colony, then across the Sound to the eastern end of Long Island. He then returned to England where he married the Widow Howell. He promised her that if she would return to Southold with him, her son, Richard would be given part of his land. As rich as this tradition is, many question it because no actual documents regarding Peter Hallock have been located. Some assume that there was never a Peter Hallock. Others have assumed that this Peter was really William Hallock and thus have named him William Peter Hallock. Until actual documentation is located, researchers will be left to their own hunches.
