ello Echo Company Families,

Happy Holidays to the family and friends of Echo Company,

I thought it would be appropriate on this Thanksgiving Day to thank the Echo families for the support during the last few months. Since 11 September 2001, we have been in a tornado of rumors and what ifs. While aboard the amphibious ships, it was difficult to communicate with you. There were erroneous news reports about the location of the 31st MEU, which in turn made it even more confusing for you. I thank each and every one of you for the support you gave your Marine. It allowed us to focus on what needed to be done.

During the last 7-weeks or so while on the ships, Echo Company has performed admirably. When our scheduled changed and we steamed south, the Marines were ready to do anything that would have been asked of them. Twice during the 7-week period, Echo Company Marines participated in Humanitarian Assistance (HA) operations in Suai, East Timor. As the security force, your Marines allowed the HA operations to be conducted without any interference. We provided security for doctors and dentists, Navy/Marine Corps personnel fixing and painting schools, and also electricians and plumbers working on the city power plant. The interaction between the Echo Company Marines and the children was outstanding. The Marines played and talked to them during the days we were there. Your Marines gave these young people a great understanding of why America is so strong and good. I was very proud to be their commander!

We miss you all and look forward to our return home soon!

Semper Fidelis,
Capt David Cooper
