Goldfish take surprisingly little effort to take care of. Only a few regular, simple procedures are needed each week to make sure your goldfish remains happy and healthy.
-Feeding time! Just like all living things, goldfish need food. You needn't cook an eight course meal to feed your goldfish, as simple goldfish and fish flakes will contain all of the nutrients your fish needs. However, bread every day would soon get boring, wouldn't it? Make your fish extra happy by giving it a leaf of lettuce occaisionally, or even some tiny cut up bits of meat. Golfish are omnivourous, which means they'll eat almost anything we can, but remember that everything comes in moderation. Uneaten food rots, and this means more work for you and sickness for the goldfish, so only feed it as much as it can eat in about 5 mins. Some pictures of typical flake food are shown below.
-Clearing the picture Dirty water isn't nice too look at. It also makes your fish unhappy too. That is why about once every couple of weeks (or when the water gets dirty) you should do a water change. To do this, simply place your fish with its water in a seperate bowl, empty your tank of all or some of its water (depending on how dirty it is), fill up the tank with new water and use special conditioning chemicals to make the water swimable for the fish. When releasing the fish back in, make sure the water temperature is the same as its current water.
-Diseases Your fish will be very unhappy if it is sick. The prescence of white or other coloured growths, listless or over excited swimming, awkward floating and bulging eyes are all signs that your fish is sick. Fortunately, there are many medications for sick fish depending on the ailments occuring. Most times, your fish can be saved but unfortunately other times, its time may be up. To prevent sickness from occuring;
dont overfeed your fish dont underfeed your fish make sure the water temperature doesn't vary too much for the fish during water changes don't introduce new fish into your tank without quarantining them first
If you follow these steps, the chances are your fish will live to a long and happy age.
