Step-by-step guide to your first goldfish

-Air pumps
Air pumps are an affordable and simple method of creating oxygen, which fish breathe, in the water of your tank. There are many varieties of air pump available, ranging from big, expensive air pumps for large fishtanks to little, inexpensive air pumps for smaller fishtanks. The air pump should be connected to a blue airstone, which creates more efficient, smaller bubbles. This airstone can be placed inside a filter which uses a vacuum to suck up and clean water by passing it through filter wool and carbon stones.
Filters are not needed for samller fishbowls, but they can greatly extend the amount of time between water changes. They can also increase the number of fish you can keep in your tank.

-Mechanical filters
Mechanical filters differ from airpumps in that they suck up the water, clean it, release it without using air in the process. This means they can be placed entirely in the water, and are more efficient in cleaning than air pumps and air filters. Mechanical filters are usually more expensive and are suited to larger tanks.

-Lights
Fluorescent lights can make a good goldfish tank look great. They highlight your goldfishes shiny scales and contribute vital vitamins needed by both plants and fish to grow and be happy. When buying a light, choose ONLY THOSE DESIGNED FOR AQUARIUM USE. Neither humans nor fish have yet developed a resistance to electric shock so it is important to be safe. Also, buy a light that fits the tank. Some smaller goldfish bowls when lit up with a larger tanks light would become too hot for the fish, and this is especially the case in tropical or subtropical climates.

-Thermometer
The thermometer is used to make sure your fishtank doesn't get too hot or cold. Goldfish are very tolerant of both hot and cold weather, but don't let the water get below 5 or above 40 degrees celcius.

-Fish net
The fish net is used for collecting and transporting your fish. Make sure it is large enough for your goldfish, and made of soft fabric or mesh as not to damage your fishes scales or eyes.
