How Should You Play Golf ?

At this point evaluate yourself and your own capabilities.

Do you have youth and a good athletic physique?

If 'YES' then you should model your instruction around the modern 'Power Golf' played by most leading tournament professionals.

If 'NO' then you would be in the higher percentage. As a 'Social Player' you should model your instruction around the basic fundamentals and you will be able to use golf's handicapping system to match an expert golfer.

The Position Of The Ball

For the Power Golfer :

Many leading professionals advise and play the ball about opposite the left heel for all shots, and move the right foot closer to the left as the clubs rise in their number. This is excellent for the professional who moves into the ball so well on all shots and hits every shot powerfully. But for the average golfer it is much easier to get the lofted clubs through the ball with a descending clubhead if the ball is at the midway position. Therefore for 'power golfers' try the following placement of the feet in relation to the ball.

The 'Power' position of the feet for shots with the various clubs. The position of the ball remains constant, just off the left heel. It's the feet that move.

For the Social Player :

The normal drive ball is teed opposite the instep of the left foot and, being raised on a tee allows the ball to be hit slightly on the upstroke. All fairway woods and low numbered irons must have the ball just forward of the centre of the stance to ensure contact on the downswing, with higher irons ball placement should be in the centre. As they improve, social players can experiment with ball placement towards that advised for the power golfer.

The illustrations show the position of the ball, feet and hands while addressing the ball.
As the distance of the shot to be played becomes shorter, the club being played will have a shorter shaft but with greater elevation in the face. The ball comes closer to the feet and the feet come closer together.
