All About…
Fleur Delacour
Welcome to this page about the only female Triwizard competitor at last year’s Triwizard Tournament. Warning about this page: Some of these facts are realistic, while others are educated guesses, or as might happen often, far-fetched fancies.
Fleur, which means flower of the court (J.K. Rowling, a former French teacher, has confirmed this), was born in Paris, in spring. Her parents saw all the flowers blooming outside and decided to call her after them. Fleur’s father, Monsieur Delacour, was the head of the French Ministry of Magic.
Fleur had a close relationship with her sister, Gabrielle. They rarely argued. Since she first heard about the Triwizard Tournament from her parents, when she was 8, she longed to participate in it. At Beauxbatons, it was all she talked about, and begged the headmistress so much “if there will be a tournament, can I be in it?” she was almost kicked out of school.
Yet she was a good student. She always turned in her assignments on time, and had very neat handwriting, which her best friend, Marie, envied.
Though Fleur’s dream always was to take part in the tournament, as she grew older, her hopes lowered. She didn’t expect the tournament was ever to take place again. Or if it would, she thought, she would have graduated by then.
At school, Fleur always was adventurous. She was the first to sign up for stunts in Quidditch, and often after lessons, she would be found roaming about the deserted village next to Beauxbatons, where ghost were rumored to be living. She never saw any ghost but one, whom she had a great friend in and they had wonderful adventures with. Marie was too scared to go there.
Monsieur and Madame Delacour were not that keen on Fleur and the Triwizard Tournament. Her mother, Marguerite, was worried about the high death tolls in former years, while her father cared more about Fleur having a profession in business and not get influenced by some silly tournament to become a dare-devil.
When Fleur heard from her headmistress that there really was going to be a Triwizard Tournament and she was eligible for it, her hopes flew up in an instant. All her time was spent on preparing for the contest – studying her magic books, performing curses, transfigurations, and potions. All this was so her name would be picked from the Goblet of Fire.
When Beauxbatons students of age enough to participate finally flew to Hogwarts, Fleur was a wreck. Her hands were shaking as she dropped the slip of paper with her name and school in the Goblet.
As Dumbledore called her name from the Goblet of Fire, she almost fainted with joy. She would really, truly be a Triwizard competitor. Her life’s dream! Coming true! At last!
