Introduction
Harry's father, although never actually present in the books still plays an important role in the story.
He is Harry's father, who Harry misses and admires. A very different sort of male guardian than Uncle Vernon. Harry resembles his father in many ways. Some people tell him he has the same personality, although not so into mischief as his father - Fred & George Weasley would fit that role better. Nevertheless, Harry resembles his father - dark, untidy hair... glasses. All except for his eyes. Harry has his mother's startling green eyes. A rare combination - dark hair with light eyes. Perhaps Harry doesn't have his father's genius - he became an Animagus at 16 - but we soon shall see. To distinguish them, James's son did not receive the same name as his father; so instead his middle name is in honor of long-gone father, James.

James's Childhood
In the books, not much is revealed about Harry's father. In fact, we know more about Lily's family than James's. To make up for it, it seems, we learn quite a lot about his time at Hogwarts in Harry's third year. In this book, all three of James's school friends are present. To Harry's disappointment, his father is not included as well.

As Harry, Ron, & Hermione learn, James was always seen with three other boys his age. First came Sirius Black, James's best friend who together plotted mischief and pranks. Although the four boys usually were together, for James & Sirius, you would never see one without the other. Next came their good friend Remus Lupin. When his friends learned that Remus was a werewolf monthly, instead of deserting him as he feared, they helped him.James & Sirius's intelligence helped them perform the difficult spell of becoming Animagi. Now whenever Remus turned into a werewolf, they could come along - as a stag, dog, and rat. They could keep him company and being animals, it calmed him down. Peter Pettigrew was the final boy in the group of four. Short, fat, and dumb, he loved being around the other boys, who accepted him and were kind to him. This group of friends lasted until the fateful day Voldemort was defeated...

Friends & Family as an Adult
Even after he graduated from Hogwarts, James Potter was still best friends with his long-time companion, Sirius Black. So when he fell in love with Lily Evans, Sirius was the obvious person to be best man.

Even after marriage, when James & Lily discovered that they were in danger, James entrusted their lives in Sirius's hands, trusting him completely. Sirius agreed, but later feared that he would be the obvious person holding their secret, so he passed it to Peter. If only Sirius hadn't been so trusting. Peter was a spy for Voldemort and immediately alerted his master in order to receive great rewards. Voldemort came to James & Lily's house that evening. James tried to save Lily & Harry - fighting Voldemort to give them time to escape. This did not work. When Voldemort was about to kill them both, Lily tried to sacrifice herself in order to save Harry. His mother's love saved him, but both his parents died that night.
