Calvin's mother, Annie, was born October 20, 1879 in Pike County, Alabama to Calvin Riley Gibson and Hannah Evelyn Blackman. She had red hair, brown eyes and fair skin. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, tatting, and embroidery.

She cooked cobblers and butter beans for the family every day.
