Unlike previous years, the festival is now organised more similarly to Italy's San Remo, with newer singers performing on the first night and established names on the second. (A debutant in last year's MHJ, Jelena Radan's doing very well to be included on the second list.)

First night highlights:

• What can only be described as Dalmatian synth-pop from Tiho.

• "Matrix"'s dance song of their usual high standard, and energetic Latino-dance from "Karma".

• Tina Zaro goes Latino too, with a major improvement on 2001.

• Is Blanša trying to be Vesna Pisarovic, or just Britney Spears?

• An emotional ballad from Artemija Jelaš - this year's Jelena Radan?

• Following on from last year's Sto zivota in Mostar, more turbofolk from Matija Vujica.

• Jasna Zlokic's uptempo number - will the team behind Zdenka Kovacicek's revival do the same for Jasna?

• Danijela sticks to type with a song that could easily have come from her 1998 album To malo ljubavi.

• Vanna, who's becoming more and more Croatia's answer to Anastacia, must be among the favourites.

2002 is the tenth year MHJ has been held, and there will be a celebration evening between the two nights of competition, containing 20 MHJ hits from previous years:
