Fort Story after Isabel

Anti-Aircraft Battery

The location of this battery has seen substantial beach erosion over the past couple of years. This has become worse after Hurricane Isabel in 2003, even after the construction of a row of breakwaters. When the breakwaters were built, the shoreline was not up to the rocks as they are now. But the protective duneline has still continued to erode. The battery has been slowly falling over the dune as the sand is washed out from under it. When I first discovered it, it was almost entirely buried under the dune. On my latest visit, I walked into it for the very first time.

1999: Previously buried, gun emplacement #3 emerges from the dune.

2000: more erosion prior to the breakwaters.

2000: Another view of Gun #3.

2002: Magazine is still level.

2004: Entrance now revealed

2003: more deterioration despite the new breakwaters.
The magazine has fallen over and the steps have separated from the gun block.

2004: more erosion after several storms including Hurricane Isabel.
