I know that it has been the hot topic of conversation for at least a day now.  The newly divorced Princess of Wales came to Washington and showed us that even without "Her Royal Highness" to back her, she still shined.

True to form, Diana arrived on time at the Pension Building for Super Sale '96, the fundraising event for the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research of Georgetown University.  As honorary chairman of the event, Diana formed a receiving line with Washington Post editor Katherine Graham.  In her white, sequined Catherine Walker, the Princess contrasted nicely with the traditional Washington black that she greeted. (see picture at right)  After the mingling and the greeting and the shopping, the Princess presented the night's honoree Ralph Lauren with his humanitarian award.  The award honored his efforts in the fight against breast cancer.

For an ordinary Tuesday night in Washington, this was anything but.  The few celebrity watchers and Di-hard fans that graced the sidewalk were treated not only to the Princess, but Barbara Walters, General Colin Powell (great suede shoes!), Chris O'Donnell, Laura Tyson (WH Econ Advisor), and Robert Novak.  Larry King arrived adorned by two beautiful women.  One was his new wife, the other...?  Paula Zahn of early morning fame arrived in the Halloween spirit, sporting an elegant gown in Pumpkin of all colors!  One could barely notice there was a little pumpkin on the way!

In a mistaken surprise, Cokie Roberts and Isaac Mizrahi walked to the red carpet together?  No, no, they just got out of their cars early and bumped into each other.  Though they were strange bedfellows, the very planned arrival of Liddy Dole's motorcade avec le General Powell and wife cold not go unnoticed.  I am sure he still not interested in a post in Dole's cabinet.

Though the banded collar was making a reappearance like bad diarrhea, two men shoed us that bow ties are still the classic.  The honoree of the night showed up in a classic B&W that showed off his perfect tan.  But, for understated elegance that jumps from far away to the discriminating eye, Oscar de la Renta takes the award for best tux!  Jumping from his car way before the carpet, Oscar breezed past the crowd in a DARK BLUE tux with ivory hankie.  Simple, classic cut that took the cake!

Bill Blass was there?  Who knew?
