6/98 *** For all my auto stuff I use Peterson Automotive, 1010 Pleasant Street, Belmont (4849725). They are both mechanics and auto body shop; they are totally honest, dependable, and pretty reasonable in price.

*** I've had good luck with Munroe Auto Body in Watertown.

*** I just had work done on my Honda across the street at HiTech Auto Body (behind the movie theater). They did a really good job and were very friendly and helpful. Very convenient too.

*** Cappola Auto Body on Winn St. in Woburn does great work and I think his prices are pretty good as well.

*** Right behind the Freshpond Mall, there is a place called Cambridge Body Works. I don't have direct experience with them, but my mother swears by them. She says they are really courteous and if you need a ride after dropping off or picking up your car, they will be happy to oblige. Also, they're not too pricey and give estimates.

*** Hanson & Tilton Auto Body, 10 Sunnyside Ave, Arlington (right off of Mass Ave), 6433644. I have used them on 3 or 4 different occasions and I think they do excellent work (and they are nice to deal with). They probably aren't cheap but I think it is worth paying a little more to get a good job (companies can really cut corners in this line of work and it only becomes evident later on).

*** I've been quite satisfied with Chuck at B&R Auto Body in Arlington (Mill St. just off Mass Ave, near the Olds dealer) for two jobs on my aging Acura Integra.

*** I have used the body shop at Haskins Oldsmobile in Wellesley for work on three cars, including our current Honda Civic. In each instance, I was very pleased with the workmanship and customer relations. Sam Goldman is the name of the body shop manager.

*** I love European Collision Center right here behind Abt Associates.

*** one of my friends owns a shop in Arlington called Arlington Auto Body his name is Ronnie Leombruno # is 7816489580 tell him you are friend of mine and he will take care of you (Frank Zaganjori)

*** 10/98 Village Collision specializes in doing things right, and they are good at dealing with insurance companies to use original rather than after-market parts and to find and repair hidden damage. They are also very pleasant and professional. Right at the Coolidge Corner T, 5 Waldo St., 735-8888.

2/99 I had an awful week last year, when on Monday I got rear-ended by a pickup truck, then on Thursday someone hit my car with a refrigerator they were throwing out. The rearending damage was more to the left side of the car, and the fridge hit a different panel on the right side of the car. My husband did some research on the insurance company approved places, and DeLeo's in Cambridge, near Central Square and MIT, was highly recommended. That location may not be the most convenient for you, but I think they did a great job on our sadly damaged Integra.

De Leo's Auto Body & Svc Inc 75 Hamilton St Cambridge, MA 02139 (617) 8761344

*** Arlington Auto Body; they seem to take a little longer than other shops, but, they do superior work and will not allow the insurance companies to order "knockoff" parts.

*** Try GALAXY in West Newton Square on Elm Street he's honest.

*** Munroe auto body on School St. in Watertown

*** I went to Peter Fuller Autobody in Watertown Square. They were pretty good. I had no problems. I can give you their phone number if you want to check them out. (617) 9248100

*** I had some substantial repair of rust done by Chuck at B&R Auto Body in Arlington. The job was well done and quite reasonable. Other folks recommended him too. Don't be put off by the grunge!

Other folks have also recommended European Collision, over behind Bread & Circus.

Also, see the latest issue of Consumer Reports on problems with bad repair parts.

One more bit of info: My mechanic, whom I trust a great deal, recommends Abko in Waltham. (781) 8997353.

*** This may be out of the way for you, but my Dad, Bill Graham, is the Body Shop Manager at Sentry South Lincoln Mercury off Gallivan Blvd. in Dorchester (Right off 93 at the Keystone Bldg.). They can do work on any car and are authorized and have working relationships with all the insurance companies. Of course I think he's the best, but I know his customers would agree that he's always honest, really helps the customer by becoming their advocate with the insurance company, and his shop does nice work. He's been in the business for a long time and knows his stuff.

He can be reached at 6178258900 ext. 630

*** My family has used B&R Auto Body in Arlington (7816438300). They are reliable, do great work, and are reasonable not cheap, but reasonable.

1/00 ***I just had some body work done on my car and was very pleased with the results and service I received, so if you are looking for a shop, I would suggest checking out Prospect Auto Body (259 Belmont Street in Belmont) at 617.489.1562. It's a small shop that is very customer-oriented and charges reasonable rates, and it doesn't hurt that owners Charlie Lee and Gary Yip are also really nice guys. It is on Commerce Insurance's preferred list - I'm not sure about any other carriers.

2/00 *** Thank you to everyone who recommended autobody shops. We took our injured vehicle to two of them: HiTech Auto (Fresh Pond) and De Leo's (near MIT). The contrast could not have been greater. HiTech took all day to produce an estimate. Moreover, they did not listen to us any of the four times we told them that we were interested in fixing it as cheaply as possible and with used parts. (We told them four times because it took four calls to the shop to get them to do the estimate before the day was through.) Our evidence for this lack of understanding includes the fact that the estimate included the price of a bumper decal that has no functionality whatsoever. The estimate was also very high.

Then we went to De Leo's. In five minutes De Leo himself and several of his mechanics were looking at the car and actively working with us to find the cheapest possible way to fix the damage. Although it still came out too expensive (though much lower than HiTech's estimate) to be worth it (see my earlier posts today), this experience alone has sold me. De Leo will have my business as long as I am in the area.
