8/98 I'm not familiar with the list of places that accept old computers but I do know of a nonprofit organization that would welcome it. The American Medical Resources Foundation (AMRF) based in Brockton MA accepts unwanted scientific and medical equipment (including computers) for shipment to developing countries. They make any necessary repairs if need be and the donation is tax deductible.

If you are interested in donating to them and can't find their number, let me know. I have one of their newsletters at home.

If you're just giving it away, I upgrade computers at school, and I'll take it off your hands. If not, I think the Boston Computer Society is still around. You could send it there. Most local schools will take it also.

Hope this helps!

I used to work for a school for emotionally disturbed children and we always needed computers. I have already delivered many computers from Abt to this school. I would be happy to take this PC off your hands and the school would send you a donation letter that you could write off on your taxes. The kids really need the hardware and get a great deal out of it.

Another great place to give old computers is an organization called Virtually Wired, located in downtown Boston. Their mission is public access, training and education for the target area called "The Empowerment Zone" of Downtown Crossing and Chinatown. They have affiliations with ABCD and also serve and use as volunteers many homeless folks from the area.

Their phone number is 542-5555 and they are located at 55 Temple Place, between Downtown Crossing and Park Street stops.

***Try the Wreath School in Boston. They took my 486 last year. I don't have their number, unfortunately. The Wreath School is an educational facility and rehabilitation home for troubled adolescents and runaways.

***You might also try the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans or the Pine Street Inn. Each of these has training facilities that might need computers. (note: Kristen had called the Pine St. Inn and they wouldn't take the 486, but they may take others.)

***Contact Hugh McDonough (ext 3523).....he used to work for a school for troubled kids, and has organized several drives to collect homeless computers for their use....
