| ***1) check out the web site for computer and compare with other vendors. www.b4l.com or www.best4less.com. I found some very good deals from them. ***2) My husband just bought one at PCs for Everyone in Cambridge (near the Galleria in East Cambridge). He got a pretty powerful machine with 17 inch monitor (no printer) for just under $1500. You can either pick and choose your components or select one of their prepackaged deals. He shopped around on the web and looked at newspaper circulars and concluded these guys they had very good deals. ***3) Hi, I just bought a computer from Quantex Microsystems. You can order right off the web. They really have phenomenal prices (the beat the daylights out of Micron, Gateway, and Dell). They don't make any of the components themselves but rather pride themselves in using only the best components already available. My machine is a PII 400 Mhz w/ a 17 inch monitor, 64 MB RAM, 6.5 GB HD, internal zip drive, faxmodemvoicemail, 32bit soundcard, DVDROM/CDROM, with a 8MB video card that does 3DFx, MPEG2, and DVDII. Also, they give you a 3 year warrantee which is better than GW2K, Micron, Dell, and IBM. They're rated #1 in customer service. I paid $2317 for it. It's a great machine, nowadays you can get the same one with a HD twice the size and a 19 inch monitor for $100 less than I paid. Give them a look and give me a call if you have questions. If you don't get a Quantex, I would take a serious look at Micron. 10/99 ***never buy anything from the Microcenter on Memorial Drive in Cambridge. Not only do they NOT have good prices, they have exceedingly poor customer service. The lines are always long, and the salespeople fairly computer illiterate. Most importantly, they are not punctual about repairs. ***I have had good luck buying online from Compaq (www.compaq.com). you can buy some of the non stateoftheart stuff for cheaper prices. A brand name is also useful when you travel internationally or when you buy for those who live in other countries (there are service centers in many countries). ***The laptop superstores (like the one in Porter Square) are very knowledgeable and easy to shop at even though the prices are not the most competitive. | |||||||||||||||
