7/99 The drop-dead cleaner seems to be Jean-Palmer:

Jean Palmer (recommended by Louis of Boston) Jean Palmer Company 3 Bryant Street # C, Woburn, MA 01801. (781) 935-7800. I95/128 exit at Winn St., south. Turns into Main St. L at Ash, to intersection with Bryant. Shirt: $16. Very long turnaround time...several weeks.

However, for faster service, the second best may be Holly Cleaners' "Holly Craft" service:

Holly Cleaners Inc/"Holly Craft" Service (recommended by Jean Palmer) 1314 Centre Street, Newton Center, MA 02459 (617) 527-0770. Holly Craft is their hand cleaning, hand pressing service, usually about 1 week, but they did a shirt for me in 3 days on request for $8. Not "drop-dead," but absolutely no visible flaws in workmanship. However, the finished work was hung on the same rack as everything else and subject to minor crushing, though it didn't happen this time.

I was also impressed by Dependable Cleaners in Watertown, which was recommended by someone else below. Excellent, knowledgeable service, good work and excellent hours – open 7 days a week. I would highly recommend both Dependable and Holly for routine use (both have 24-hour drop off).

Recommendations from others:

Anton's Cleaners Inc (recommended by Martini Carl) 7 Harnden Street, Reading, MA 01867 (781) 944-9730 . I95/128 east of I93, exit at 129 west, merges into Harnden

*** I've been using Dependable Cleaners for a couple of years. They are on Galen Street in Watertown, Harvard St in Brookline, and probably several other locations. They are great, as dry cleaners go (usually I get pretty fed up pretty fast with dry cleaners). They take excellent care of clothes (put tissue in arms of jackets to prevent wrinkles, protect shoulder pads, replace missing buttons, etc), recycle bags and hangers, and have not wrecked or lost anything (which is well worth mentioning, as somehow most dry cleaners tend to do that a lot). Their VIP drop off system works really well (a bag, a 24hour chute) and you get a 50% discount after you use the bag for 10 or 12 times. I also like that they serve as a clothing donation dropoff for Boomerangs, the AIDS Action Committee Thrift Shop. Dependable Cleaners 152 Galen Street, Watertown, MA 02472 (617) 924-6500. Rt. 16 across river. When 16 takes a right turn, go straight onto Galen St. Just past Maple St. but on right.

I have heard that the dry cleaner up Concord Ave toward Cambridge at the intersection of Concord and ....Walden (I think) on the right is quite good at clothing that needs special care.

SunRite Cleaners in Belmont Center. They are excellent in both dry cleaning and tailoring.
