11/98 Here are the responses I got to my request for Salons nearby. I tried Leon and Co. They were very good. The cost was $35

try Dale or Rob at DHR Hairdressers in Harvard Sqthey're wacky but very capable and reasonable (both economically and interpersonally!).

I've been going to Rosalie at LaCapelli in Cambridge between Harvard and Porter Square and I think she's great. So do several people I've recommended her to. Tel 4911116. She charges $40 for a cut.

I was told about one in Belmont Center (across from Filene's) called "Leon & Co." Apparently, Leon, the owner is amazing. I haven't been there (I go somewhere near my house in Franklin), but a longtime Cambridgedweller I know raves about Leon (she is relatively vain with good hair, if that helps).

My recommendation: Kendall Hair Company, Diane. I went to her for about 7 years and only stopped because I felt it was time for some new blood she had gotten to know my hair so well that we were both kind of stuck in a rut. I've sometimes regretted my decision because I haven't found anyone as reliably good. Diane really listens to what you want and is responsive, but will also give you her advice if you ask. Her manner is very lowkey and mellow she is not one of those haircutters who is horrified if you trim your bangs yourself or wait too long for a trim. Very easy to work with. Her rate was about $27.

I go to Leon and Co. in Belmont Center. A great deal of other Abt folks go there as well. They are good and it is VERY convenient.

I go to Gino on Holyoke Street in Harvard Sq. I've been going to Evelyn for years and, as picky as I am, she does what I would consider a great job especially when I go for a big change. She's a wiz at color too. I also like going to her because she's very low key and not booked out weeks in advance like some other folks I've used.

Only drawback (and a major one) is the price $50 for a cut.

Park West Salon, Arlington Heights (781) 646WEST. Any stylist there is great!

Carol's: 1678 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02138 6175479436

This is just outside Harvard Sq. heading toward Porter on the LEFTnear a sports store, Starbucks, a natural food store, a great little "corner grocery" store (?Montrose?), and a Mexican restaurant. (Chang Chou's restaurant, on the same side, while wonderful, it too far upCarol's is sort of nestled within the block.) Across from I think it's Rosy's restaurant, near a bank and antique store. Sorry I can't think of the names of these places, but it's a nice little area! Carol is the owner; JULIE, an Asian woman, is good tooI haven't tried any of the others there. It's a nice pleasant little shop, with lots of products for sale (no pressure). ALSO only 1.52 miles from Abt. I have impossible hair & have tried MANY operators/places. Carol & Julie are the ones I always come back to. If you decide to try it, tell them I recommended it, & let me know if you like or don't like it.

my friends and i all like Sal Sanizaro on Newbury Street. I think you get a discount as a first time customer, and it can be reasonably priced if you go to one of the cheaper stylists.

I recommend Dale Julio at DHR in Harvard Square. He LISTENS and does a great job with a range of different hair types, thin or thick, straight or curly. Phone = 8685355. If you go, tell him I sent you!
