10/99 ***I find that Ski Market is actually good. Go during a slow time of the week and ask them to spend some time with you working out what is best. I'd recommend the manager at the Comm. Ave., location.
| ***Perhaps the best prices, selection and expertise are at Strand, near Worcester. (800) 5937547. It's a bit of a drive, though, so you might want to browse locally and then call them to see if they can beat someone else's price. Service is excellent there. My first pair of skis were rentals that I bought at the end of a season. For years, while my skiing improved and my equipment needs changed, I rented, despite the cost. When I knew what I wanted for the long haul, I bought a pair of high performance skis I'd tried out all day. They were excellent in quality and price. There is still some of last year's clearance models available at great discounts. Prices are very much fashion driven, and you don't always lose anything in terms of performance by buying last year's models. For an overview of equipment parameters and models, buy the August issue of Ski Magazine, which should still be available and which surveys and tests the year's new equipment. And don't skimp on boots! Some places, like (I think) Ski Market and Strand, guarantee fit and comfort, so you can exchange or adjust boots you've bought there after trying them out. ***Ski Market moves its close out merchandise to a seasonal bargain store, National Ski Wholesalers, on Route 1 past the Dedham Mall, it usually opens around now ***Ski swaps with new and used equipment have great buys...the nearest one may be at Wachusett Mountain, about an hour away | |||||||||||||||
