1/99 *** My friend had taken a class in Davis Square on Elm St that she enjoyed. The name is something like "BKS Iyengar Center?" and the cost was about $150/semester (4 months once a week).
| *** You might check into Wellspace, which is located across the street, behind Staples. They have yoga classes, etc. I haven't taken classes there but it looks like a good place. (I went there and bought a gift certificate for my husband to get a therapeutic massage for Christmas he hasn't used it yet.) *** I go to Mystic River Yoga, up on RT 16 by the UHaul place. (It's actually Boston Ave or something, but it's right off of 16). I love it! Their phone # is 7813960808 *** The Iyengar yoga place, center? in Davis Square is supposed to be one of the best anywhere. *** I am thinking of also taking yoga, and I may actually join the Wellbridge Health and Fitness Center in Harvard Square which , included in membership has yoga classes. *** Davis Square, Patricia Walden's school has a good reputation, and I know a couple of people who have taken classes and have said good things. *** I went to yoga classes in Harvard Square with a woman named Portia Brockaway (sp?). The moves were good but she was a bit of a freak. I had to contain my laughter on occasion because of her bizarre comments throughout the stretches. *** I would warmly endorse the BKS Iyengar Center in Davis Square. It varies somewhat from teacher to teacher, but I generally like the approach. Lots of different levels and schedules are available. I'm not sure what differentiates the various kinds of yoga, The Iyengar center teachers have a lowkey spiritualism that enhanced the experience for me without making me feel like I had to join a cult to belong. The main focus is on relaxation and flexibility, although you inevitably build strength and endurance in the process. *** Yoga classes are offered next door by Fitness Works. I also understand that Mystic River Yoga is good. They're in Medford and I have a schedule if you are interested. *** you may want to call the marino center in cambridge on mass ave. they will probably give you a good recommendation. also, be sure to go somewhere that gives beginner level courses and that the instructors are certified yoga instructors i would look into that b/c some places offer it as a 'new rage thing' and you may take a class with someone who has never been properly trained to teach you the breathing and stretching techniques. 2/00 ***GTE (both the building behind Abt and one building across from Alewife) offers both Yoga and Tai Chi through "Fitness Works". The Yoga class is offered next door (70 Fawcett Street) on Wednesdays at 1:001:45 and Fridays at 12:0012:45, and I know some Abt people go to these. Yoga is also offered at 150 CambridgePark Drive (across from Alewife) on Tuesdays at 1:001:45 and Thursdays at 5:456:45. Tai Chi is only offered at 150 CambridgePark Drive on Fridays at 1:001:45. ***Patricia Walden in Davis Square and Baron Baptiste in Porter Square are both wellknown yoga teachers. I've also heard that there is a Iyengarstyle (more vigorous than average) yoga school in Davis Square. ***The Dance Complex in Central Square. Debra Bluth offers an outstanding Yoga class for $10/1.5 hour class. No prereg required. Call ahead to find out times. Arrive a bit early to claim some space as the class can get crowded. ***I take classes at Mystic River Yoga, which is on Rt 16 behind the UHaul place (right new Planet Fitness). It's a little pricey $17/1 1/2 hour class as a dropin, but they're really good classes. 1/01 ***Debra Bluth used to teach a class at the Dance Complex in Central Square. That is where I started yoga and it was excellent. I haven't been to a class in over a year so I don't know if she is still there. ***Someone who has practiced yoga for several years and has sampled many Boston yoga studios: The BKS Iyengar school in Davis Square is very good. Patricia Walden is their best (and most famous) teacher. Very good if you like Iyengar method. Stay clear of the Baptiste Power Yoga center in Porter Square. While they are very trendy, they do a poor job teaching proper positioning. Definitely bad for beginners. ***Boston Yoga Center (I think that is the name) on Joy Street on Beacon Hill is really the best place in town though not that convenient. ***Mystic River Yoga - on Boston St right off of 16 behind the U-Haul place. They're a little pricey--$17 for a 1 1/2 hour class, but very good. ***Just to let you know Abt Associates has a deal with the wellness centre across the street in the Fresh Pond Mall. They hold yoga classes and Abt employees get 10% off. I have heard they are pretty good.. | |||||||||||||||
