HSVVN Sport-Day 1997
Where was the greatest soccer match in England played on April the 6th?
No, it was not at Anfield home of Liverpool FC, where Liverpool lost
and did not get to the top of the premiership table. Nor it was at
Wembley, where Ravenelli and Co. failed to beat Leicester in the
Coca-Cola cup final. It was at a place called Aylesbury Youth Club
in south London, where the first ever 5_a_side football tournament
organised by the Vietnamese Students Association in U.K (HSVVN) took
place.
8 teams entered the tournament to battle it out for the covet cup:
1. Bath and Bristol (B&B)
2. Dream Team (DT).
3. Dynamo Greenwich (DG).
4. Loose Canon (LC).
5 .Queen Mary and Westfield College (QMW).
6. Sao Mai Project (SMP).
7. Sao Nam Band (SNB).
8. South Bank University (SBU).
Little was known about the teams prior to the tournament. Could Dynamo Greenwich win the cup?
Their park football was allegedly said to be at its perfection. What about Sao Nam
Band? Their music had made people stand on their toes but what about
their football? And what about the professionals from B&B and QMW?
Supporters came from every parts of the country to support
their teams, they had came to give that extra push to the players whom
they had heard so much but before to this tournament had no chance to
see their heroes in action. The teams were divided into 2 qualifying
groups, each team had to play every other team in the same group.
Only the top 2 teams with highest points qualified for the Semi
Final.
Even though it was a competitive tournament, the matches were played in a friendly atmosphere, players and supporters mingled amicably
to swap emails telephone numbers, and of course, the latest gossips since it was one of a few chances that HSVVN members can meet up .
Every match was a pleasure to watch, in the Final Loose Canon depite of beating all of their opponents in the qualifying rounds (including the eventual champion), lost 0-2 to South Bank University.
