I have an interesting story to share A doe out in the barn had five live babies, all perfect size, warm, and their mother seemed attentative. The next day, we discovered that all the babies had died except one... the dead babies had shrunken-in stomachs, but were warm. The first thing I thought to check, was indeed the source of the problem... my doe had only gotten milk in one nipple. Surely not enough to feed five hungry babies. Being a frist time mother there was no way for her to know she needed to spend more time in the box. So this just proves how important it is to breed a number of does at a time, so fostering is possible, and to check the does milk right after she gives birth to make sure she has enough to feed the babies. |
