READING NO. 13
No one could have thought that Old D.J. Smith would have made it.
When D.J. first came up with the idea, everyone in the town thought that
the
old man was crazy(瘋了).
"Are you kidding? Going to school at your age!" said one of the
town folks(人).
"You can hardly see, D.J.," said another.
"That's right. You are blind(瞎的) without your glasses on," said a
second
person.
"Besides, you can't remember things easily now," his wife also
said.
But nothing could stop Old D.J. from going to school. He was from a
poor(窮的) family. His parents didn't have the money for him to go to school
when he was young. He had to work to help his family ever since he was
only nine years old. He worked very hard. Now he owns the biggest
supermarket
in the town.
"Money means nothing, but knowledge does," said D.J. to his wife.
"I always wanted to study. When I was young, I couldn't because I was
poor.
But now, money is not a problem any more."
Today was a special day for D.J. It was his graduation day. When he took
the diploma(文憑) from Mr. Wilson. He couldn't help but burst(爆發) into
tears(眼淚).Everyone there was moved, too. Like they said, "Never too old
to
learn." Old D.J. Smith really did it.
