READING NO. 15
Reading:
Joseph Conrad was one of the most important writers in English
literature(文學).
He was born in Poland(波蘭). His family was very poor(窮),
and he had to work in the port as a porter when he was very young. Then he went
to London(倫敦) to start his new life. When he
first arrived(到達), he could hardly speak English.
In order to get a better job, he began to learn the new language. He then fell
in love with it, and started to learn the beauty of it.
He decided to be a writer. However, many of his Polish friends told him
that he was dreaming. After all, English is a foreign(外國的) language to him. But this didn't
take him down. He began to read all kinds of English books, magazines and
newspapers. He wrote small articles for the newspaper. He finally became very
successful in English writing. Like he himself said, "If I hadn't believe
in myself, I would have been a porter all my life."
