READING NO. 16
About a hundred years ago, Samuel Clemens, using the name Mark Twain(馬克吐溫),
wrote a story called The Adventures(冒險)
of Tom Sawyer. It is about a boy and his friends who lived in a small town near
the Mississippi(密西西比) River. Tom was not a real boy,
but he was like the boys Clemens knew when he was a boy.
Tom Sawyer was a happy boy who lived with his Aunt(姑姑) Polly and his cousins. He did not
like to go to school or to church(教堂).
He did not like to work or be clean. He loved to play and have fun.
One Saturday Aunt Polly said, "Tom, today you must paint the
house." Tom did not want to paint the house. It was a beautiful day, He
wanted to go fishing, but he began to paint. A friend walked by. "Too bad
you have to work," he said to Tom. "Work?
I wouldn't call this work. I love to paint." He painted and painted and his
friend watched. Soon his friend asked to paint.
"No," said Tom.
"Why not? Please. Let me do it."
Tom wouldn't say yes.
"I will give you some candy(糖果),
Tom."
"Well, just for a few minutes," said Tom. "You know, I
really shouldn't do this, but...."
His friend happily began to paint and Tom ate the candy. Soon many of his
friends came, and Tom got them into it the same way. In two hours the house was
painted two times, and all Tom did was sit and watch. He enjoyed the candy,
little toys(玩具),
and other things the boys gave him. When the boys had done their painting, Aunt
Polly was very surprised to see that.
"You did a very good job, Tom. Come into the house. I think you
should have some delicious ice cream.
