READING NO. 2
One day, Tom Sawyer was angry with Aunt Polly. He
met his friend Joe. "I'm running away, Joe. Do you want to come with
me?"
"Where
are you going?"
"Oh, I don't know. Down the river, I guess."
"Yes, I'll go with you and let's find Huck. He'd like to go,
wouldn't he?"
In a few hours the three boys were on their way to see the world. They
found an old boat near the river bank(岸). They sailed(航行) to an island(島) not far from the
bank.
"We should make this our camp," said Huck.
"Yes, and we can go back to our houses and get food when we need
it."
"Only in the middle of the night," said Tom. "We don't
want anybody to see us."
For three days they played Indians and many other games. They cooked over
a fire and slept on the ground. But slowly they began to miss their homes.
"I think we should go home," said Joe.
"I guess we should, shouldn't we?" said the others.
Everyone in the town thought the boys had died in the river. The people
met in the church(教堂).
Everyone was very sad. The preacher(牧師) spoke about
the three wonderful(美好的) boys. He said many good things about them. Just then he looked up and
his eyes grew wide(寬) with surprise. Everyone turned to see the three "dead" boys
coming in.
