It was one rainy night, and just when Dr. Jones was about to get into bed, the telephone rang. "Who could that be? It's almost twelve o'clock." He picked up the phone and a voice(聲音) in a panic(著急的) came right into his ear. It was Dr. Smily. He practiced medicine in a small town

called Dusty Town, which was thirty miles(英哩) away.

     "Thank Goodness you are home, Dr. Jones," said Smily.

     "Yes, what is it for you to call me this late at night?"

     "I have a patient(病人) who needs an open-heart surgery(手術) immediately(立刻). You know

      I am not a surgeon(外科醫生). I need you to perform(展現) the operation(手術)."

     "Can you have the patient moved to my clinic(診所)?"

     "I am afraid() not. The patient's condition(情形) is critical(危急的)."

     "All right. I will get there as fast as I can."

     Dr. Jones hung() up the telephone and began to get dressed. In a short time he was driving his car on the street. It was raining hard, and he was driving slowly.  When he came to one intersection(十字路口), he stopped for the red light. Suddenly a man with a dark(灰暗的) raincoat(雨衣) coming from nowhere opened the car door. Before he could do anything, the man pointed(指向) at him with a gun.

     "I am sorry, but I need your car," the man said.

     "Sir, I can't give you my car. You see I am on my way..."

     "Shut up!(住嘴) I don't want to hurt you. I just need the car."

   Dr. Jones had no choice(選擇) but to get off his car. He watched the man drive his car away.

He then called the taxi company for help but no one was there. It was almost one o'clock, and no one would want to work. Finally, a police car came by, and after knowing what had happened, the police gave Dr. Jones a ride to Dusty Town. It was two o'clock when Dr. Jones got there.

     "It is really kind of you to come," said Dr. Smily, "but the boy died() half an hour ago."

     "I am very sorry. I could have made it if only I hadn't been robbed(搶劫)," said Dr. Jones.

     "You have done your best. Now let me introduce(介紹) you the boy's father," Dr. Smily pointed to a man sitting at the corner(角落). It was the man with a dark raincoat.

.     "My God. It was you.." screamed() Dr. Jones. Seeing Dr. Jones' face(), the man realized(明白了) what he had done, and couldn't help bursting(爆發) into tears(眼淚).
