READING NO. 6
The
One Who Never Dies(死)
In order to show(表示) his
gratitude(感激), Zeus, king(國王) of all gods(神) and godesses(女神), grants(許諾) this lady a
wish.
"Before you tell me what your wish is, think carefully. For when
your wish is spoken, it is granted," says Zeus.
This young good-looking lady says to herself, " I am rich and
beautiful. There is nothing that I need except(除了) for
immortality(永生不死)."
Thinking of being able to live as long as the gods, without giving it a
second thought, the lady says to Zeus, " I want to live forever(永遠)."
After hearing this, Zeus nods(點點頭) his head
and disappears(消失了).
Zeus keeps his promise(承諾) , and the
lady can not die. But she does get old. She gets so old that she can't even walk
or stand. She becomes weaker(虛弱)
and
weaker
every day. Now she really wants to die, and she begs(求)
Zeus for his mercy(慈悲). However, a
promise is a promise. She just can not die. Zeus has given her the eternal(永恆的) life, but
he doesn't promise her the eternal youth.
