Introduction
Johor Bahru (JB) Hua Tiong Wushu
Association was originally named as Johor Bahru Hua Tiong
Pugilistic Art Institute established in 1967 by Founder and Chief Instructor Master Tan Choo Seng. A well known Martial Art expert in Singapore and Malaysia, and a special disciple of Grand master Gao Can from Singapore Shuanglin Temple. Master Tan learned many different forms of martial arts
including Southern and Northern pugilistic arts, eighteen different types of
ancient Chinese weapons, Taijiquan and Qigong. Master
Tan's students in South Malaya numbered over a thousand students who under the
tutelage of Master Tan, excel in Southern and Northern pugilistic arts, two
person sparring pattern, Chinese weapons, two person weapons sparring pattern,
qigong and others.
During the early days when Master Tan personally
supervise all martial training and qigong, students benefited especially from
qigong training. The Dajingjin Qigong is able to relieve blood pressure, stomach
illnesses, depression and other imbalances of the body. At a higher stage, the Dajingjin Qigong is able to naturally prevent and/or heal bruises
from impact of hard objects such as hit by a steel water pipe from the back,
break coconut with your head, tiles, throat and tree truck impact on chest. On
26July1980, JB Hua Tiong working together with other clans in Johor help raise funds for 5 primary schools in the Johor State.
During the Johor Cultural Charity Show, Hua Tiong disciple Mr Lim Hua Sing performed a qigong demonstration by allowing a van
with 10 men inside to roll across his stomach. Lying on a nail bed, Mr Lim Hua Sing completed this stunt without sustaining any injury
at all. This dangerous performance created widespread publicity for JB Hua Tiong in Southern
Malaya and gained respected
comments from all martial arts group.
Other than promoting the Chinese culture, JB Hua Tiong also participated in many State functions, Sultan's
Birthday, National Day, Clan's special occasions, Temple festivals and Cultural possessions since 1974 with
the newly established Dragon Troupe. Hua Tiong Dragon Troupe is the
first in Malaysia to construct and display the luminous dragon dance
and double dragon dance. These luminous and double dragon dances are well
received during the Lunar New Year cultural possession in Johor.
On 11July1988, JB Hua Tiong Wushu
Association was officially registered as a society in Malaysia. With the recognition from the ruling government, JB Hua Tiong organized its first Johor Wushu Display Competition at the JB Malaysia Garden
Basketball Hall on 25May1991. This competition attracted more than 65 participants from different
schools which include categories such as traditional Southern wushu, weapons, wushu and a
junior section. This Competition was declared a success.
In 1993, JB Hua Tiong Dragon Troupe help
raised fund for a Secondary School in Johor. A total
of RM56,525 was raised and RM35,762.50 was donated to
the school fund. On 5May the same year to 5February1994, JB Hua Tiong invited Wushu practitioner
Shao Zhao Ming from the renowned Beijing Sports Academy, China to start a wushu class for interested
participants. The response was overwhelming.
7February1994 begins with
a first for JB Hua Tiong to work with a various social and community groups
to offer New Year red packets to 7 old folks' homes in the Johor State.
Since 1December1994, JB Hua Tiong has begun inviting China Wushu
teachers to Malaysia to raise the standards of wushu.
Similarly Ms Tu Hua from Sichuan province, China was invited as a permanent wushu
teacher in JB Hua Tiong. From 23August1994 to 30November1994 another teacher
Ms Yu Xia from Shangdong, China was also invited to teach wushu in JB Hua Tiong.
On 5November1994, JB Hua Tiong took lead to invite all Hua
Tiong Associations including Singapore Hua Tiong to organize a
commemoration dinner for Damo, Founder of Shaolin Temple cum 28th Anniversary of Hua Tiong Pugilistic Art
Institute. During this commemoration dinner, there were more than 28 displays
of Chinese martial arts. More than a thousand people attended this
Commemoration Dinner.
With the support from the
public, clans and business associates JB Hua Tiong is able to leap from infancy to maturity today. JB Hua Tiong will continue to serve the community with vigor and
especially enlisting the assistance from our Founder and Chief Instructor Master Tan Choo Seng.
