Training and Achievements

 

Training

Students in Hua Tiong (Zhong) follow a strict training curriculum. There are four levels of award to students who made progress in their learning of Hua Tiong pugilistic art. These are

 

·        Certificate

·        Diploma

·        Under-graduate degree

·        Post-graduate degree

 

At the certificate level, students learn the art of self-defence, fitness and healthy lifestyle. There are 6 grades at the certificate level.

 

Certificate Level

  • White sash     - 6th Ji or Novice
  • Blue sash       - 5th Ji
  • Green sash    - 4th Ji
  • Brown sash    - 3rd Ji
  • Red sash        - 2nd Ji
  • Black sash     - 1st Ji (band 1, 2 and 3)

 

At grade 1 band 3 certificate level, the student is allowed to proceed to take his or her diploma level course. The level of advancement depends on the ability of students practicing in the diploma and under-graduate degree courses. These levels comprise of the following grades given below.

 

Diploma Level

  • Black with yellow ribbon round sash           - 1st Duan
  • Black with yellow ribbon round sash           - 2nd Duan
  • Black with Hua Tiong dragon ball in sash  - 3rd Duan

 

Under-graduate Level

  • Black with Hua Tiong dragon ball in sash                          - 4th Duan
  • Black with Hua Tiong dragon ball and dragons sash        - 5th Duan
  • Black with Hua Tiong dragon ball and dragons sash        - 6th Duan

 

The post-graduate degree level is based on contributions made by the student to Hua Tiong Pugilistic Art Institute. The Chief Instructor Master Tan Choo Seng himself and the local Executive Committee would have to recommend for these awards.

 

Post-graduate Level

  • Gold with Hua Tiong dragon ball and dragon sash           - 7th Duan
  • Gold with Hua Tiong dragon ball and dragon sash           - 8th Duan

Achievements

Hua Tiong (Zhong) Pugilistic Art Institute has a long record of achievements both in competition and community service. A summary is given below.

 

Major milestones

1966 -             Established the Singapore Hua Tiong Pugilistic Art Institute (Headquarters) and participated in many national fund raising events

1967 -             Established the Johor Hua Tiong Wushu Association (Country Head Office) and fund raising for the Spastic Children and other Community Welfare Services

1968 -             Martial Art display for the Abdul Rahman Institute fund raising event

1969 -             Martial Art display for private institution fund raising committee

1970 -             4th Anniversary Dinner and Singapore National Day Martial Art display

1971 -             Participated in the Geylang East Community Centre Martial Arts display

1972 -             Established the Kota Tinggi and Tampui Hua Tiong Wushu Associations

1973 -             Martial Art display for the Johor Youth Group fund raising event

1974 -             Martial Art display for the Johor State National Day Celebration

1975 -             Martial Art display for the Johor State Basket Ball fund raising event

1976 -             Established the Pontian Hua Tiong Wushu Association and fund raising for a Secondary School (over RM20,000)

1977 -             Martial Art display for the Johor Fujian Clan Association 50th Anniversary Dinner

1978 -             Dragon display for the Geylang East Old Folks Home fund raising event (over S$16,000)

1979 -             13th Anniversary Dinner and fund raising for a Secondary School (over RM20,000)

1980 -             15th Anniversary Shaolin Damo Commemoration Dinner and fund raising for 5 primary schools

 

 


Pugilistic achievements

1973 -             Kuching Pugilistic Art Tournament: 3 Golds, 1 Silver and 3 Bronzes

1983 -             Taiwan (Republic of China) World Wushu Tournament: Overall Second Place

1984 -             Malacca Chinese Wushu Tournament: 6 Golds and 2 Silvers

1985 -             All Malaysia Chinese Pugilistic Art Tournament: 3 Golds and 3 Bronzes

1990 -             1st Annual Johor State Wushu Tournament: 1 Gold, 4 Silvers and 1 Bronze

1991 -             South East Asian Games: Taiji 1 Bronze

                        2nd Annual Johor State Wushu Tournament: 3 Golds, 3 Silvers and 4 Bronzes

1996 -             4th Annual Johor State Wushu Tournament: 6 Golds and 1 Bronze

1998 -             Johor State Taiji Push-hands Tournament: Open Champion

                        Kuching World Martial Arts Tournament: 7 Golds

                        All Malaysia Martial Arts Tournament: 7 Golds and 7 Silvers

2002 -             Hong Kong World Dragon Dance Invitation Competition: Overall Champion
