Late Nights and Last Resorts

It was like any other boring Monday night, the crew had spent the majority of the evening at the local pool hall. After we got our share of billiards everyone went home, including myself. After flipping through every channel on the TV countless times, I decided I had enough and it was time to hit the streets and find something to do.

I stopped by a pizza place down the street from my house, which is where my friend Chuck works. Chuck said he was about to get off work and head down to Frank & Steins Social Club (a Hub-Bub friendly bar) to check out the scene.

There wasn’t anything going on at the bar. After kicking my ass at darts, Chuck asked if I wanted to stop at a girl named Liza’s house. She was supposed to be having some people over and we thought it might me fun, so we headed over. Just like the bar there wasn’t anything going on there either. in fact no one even answered the damn door.

It was closing in on 3 am and instead of giving it up and going home, we swallowed our pride and did the only thing left to do in this piss poor town that late at night....we went to Wal-Mart! The local Wal-Mart is currently being completely remodeled. This means every fucking isle is out of wack so it’s like you are in a giant maze. We finally found everything we were looking for, including the way out. Well Chuck and I decided it was time to hang our heads and admit defeat, for there was nothing to left to do.

On our way back to Chucks car (still outside the bar) we passed a girl lying on the street about a block from my house. I look at Chuck and say, “Did you see that?” Chuck had no idea what I was talking about so I told him what I saw and turned around for a second look.

I pulled up with her on my side of the car, and proceeded to asked if she was okay. The girl was on her back with her arms and legs in the air screaming “Help me! Help me!” I asked what was wrong, she said, half crying, “My friends abandoned me! My fucking friends abandoned me! All I want to do is get home!” I asked where she lived. As she was telling me where she lived I look over at Chuck and he said “If we give her a ride she’s sitting up front with you! I’m not turning my back to her, she’s fucked up on something!” I pulled my car over and we headed across the street to see what we could do.

Chuck and I helped her to her feet and started across the street. I asked her name she said “Carrie” and turned out we used to work with her at the pizza place. I didn’t remember her, but I guess she worked there for a couple days. As soon as she gets into my car two people spring from the house she was lying in front of. One was a girl the other a guy. The girl screamed “what do you think you are doing with her?” I told her that I used to work with her and I was giving her a ride home. I guess this girl was Carries best friend that had abandoned her earlier that night. I told her that if she wanted to get Carrie out of the car that was fine, but she didn’t have shoes on so she should go get her some. The girl came back out with Carrie’s shoes and started to get her out of the car.

The other guy just stood there like he was making sure me and Chuck didn’t try any risky business. Carrie got out of the car and the two girls hugged and started crying. I think to myself “why in the hell was this girl out on the street?” That’s when Carrie said “ I love you! I would die for you! You fucking abandoned me!” Then the fight began. These two girls starting smacking, hitting, and scratching at each other. The guy got between the two and tried to break it up. The girl that came from the house was only wearing a T-shirt. So on top of everything else now we have a girl with no underwear or pants on rolling around on the ground.

The fight finally got broken up and Carrie was back in the car. After exchanging a few more colorful words and even more colorful gestures, Chuck Carrie and I were on our way. Carrie lived about ten minutes away from where we “found” her so we had a bit of a drive. Most of the drive was by way of highway so it wasn’t going to be to bad. Once on the highway Carrie leaned her seat back and started acting like she was going to vomit. I started to pull over asking her if she was going to puke. She screamed at me telling me not to stop the car, that she was going to be okay. Chuck hands her a bag from the back seat and said “Here if you are going to be sick, use this!”

Carrie never did get sick, in fact she calmed down for about two seconds. Then she started crying louder than anything I’ve ever heard in my life. Chuck and I start trying to get her to calm down but she just kept screaming “My fucking friends abandoned me! I would do anything for them and they fucking abandoned me! I need to talk to my psychiatrist.” I asked her about having a psychiatrist and she told me about how she had tried to kill herself four days earlier. This girl obviously has more problems than I know how to fix or even what to say about them.

We were getting close to her house and Chuck leaned up from the back seat asking her who she lived with. She replied with “My husband” Chuck and I looked at each other and at the same time say “Husband?” Then she started saying “No don’t worry about him, he’s cool. You don’t have anything to worry about.”

We finally pull up in front of her house where there wasn’t a light in the world. I walked around the car to open the door and help her out. As soon as the door was open I asked her if she could get out and said, “yes” as she fell out onto her face. I don’t know if it was more funny or sick, I wanted to laugh but the ‘THUD’ noise her face made when it met the pavement was sickening. I tried to help her up but I wasn’t being a whole lot of help. Lying there with her face on the ground she told me to go get her husband for her. I walked up to the door and knocked loudly and rang the doorbell. About that time Chuck was walking her to the door.

When they got to the door I asked her if her husband was going to come to the door with a gun or anything like that and she said “Probably”. After that all I heard was Chuck throwing her shoes down and the door on my car door shutting. Then Carrie turned to me and said “ I love you guys!” and started to give me a hug. Just as her arms were about to go around me, I look up and there was her husband standing in the door-way. I don’t know if it was because of the shit I just went through or what, but this guy was just plain creepy looking. Thats when I decided it was time to head to the car. On my way to the car I heard Carrie banging on the door screaming “let me in” and her husband (at least I think it was her husband) saying “What do you want?” and that was the last we saw of them.

I still remember the address I dropped Carrie off at, so I guess I’ll have be sure and drop a issue of this magazine off in her mailbox. That way she can see how much I appreciate her giving me something to write about, let alone a story to tell my friends.

It was the end of the night with nothing to do and time to go home, but there was one last chance for something to happen, and it did.
