Their System Doesn’t Work For You
I named this column (if that is what you want to call it) after the Anti-Flag song because I believe it fits my current situation perfectly.
Two months ago I was involved in a car accident, and at first I thought it wasn’t that big of a deal. After all my car was the only thing that was damaged, the car I hit wasn’t hurt and neither was the white trash woman driving it. The police came and even though it was my fault I wasn’t sited, so everything seemed to be okay.
Now it’s two months later and the whole damn thing has gone to shit. I took my car to the garage to be fixed today and my insurance are still going to pay for it but they are fighting me. They are trying to say that I was working when I got into the accident, which I wasn’t and my boss even told them I wasn’t. The reason it is such a big deal is because I deliver pizza and if you deliver pizza you have to have commercial insurance and it costs a fortune. If you don’t have commercial insurance you are not covered while working and it is illegal to drive.
So yesterday I got a call from my ever so trusty insurance company letting me know that if I want to keep my job then I would have to “come on down to the office and set up your new policy” I say okay how much money is it going to cost me for the “good stuff”? It is going to cost $300 just to start getting commercial insurance ( they failed to mention what this money is for) and then $110 a month. I don’t know about you but I’m not the first person to rush right out and pay $300 just to be able to work at my shitty fast food job.
Even though it’s a pain in the ass I’ll probably pay the money and go on with my life. I know right now your sitting there reading this (oh and thank you if have made it this far) and thinking why is this asshole telling me his problems. Well the reason is that I want to talk about insurance companies and the fact that they always try to get out of doing their job. I mean they are an insurance company, they are suppose to pay for damage done to your property in the case of an accident. Let me go ahead quote the official definition of the word insurance as found in the “Merrian Webster” dictionary: Insurance - A means of guaranteeing protection or safety. The only thing that I feel I have been guaranteed is a fucking headache and a pain in the ass.
These people are still investigating me two months after the damn wreck. What is to investigate? My car is wrecked and I wasn’t working so fix the damn thing! Don’t call five times a day and ask off the wall questions like have I ever received a traffic violation while delivering pizza. The worse part of this is that when you have a claim your insurance premium raises. This I do not understand, I mean I have had insurance with the same company for over three years and have never had a claim. Where has all the money gone that I’ve been paying all along? Why does it need to raise? They haven’t lost anything. And to beat all they are making me change policies and charging me $300 dollars to do so, what in hell is this money for? If I don’t have another wreck the entire time I’m on this policy do I get it back or does some sleazy insurance guy get to jerk off on a prostitute pissing herself with it?
As far as the commercial insurance goes this is something else I yet again do not understand. If I’m insured then I should be just that, insured. If I deliver pizza or just have a car I like to park on the street one policy should cover it all. If I get into a wreck every other month then of course the cost of my insurance should raise in fact I shouldn’t be allowed to drive. But I don’t and since I’ve been driving (for almost 6 years now) this is the first wreck I’ve had and it wasn’t even that bad. I think that if you have a bad driving record and you get a job delivering for a company then your insurance should raise do to the fact that you are more of a risk and if so the place you are working for should have to cover at least half of the amount it raised. They hired you that means they have trust in your driving ability, so what would be problem with it? I’ll tell you the problem, the rich people you work for won’t make as much money and that’s what is wrong with the whole damn system.
I work for Papa Johns PIzza and even though they check your driving record before they hire you and make you bring in proof of insurance, they do not make sure you have the proper insurance. They know that if they checked for commercial insurance they wouldn’t have any employees and no employees means no money will be maid! If this was to happen then they would have to break down and provide some kind of insurance to cover their delivery drivers, once again they would not make as much money. The only person hurt by this bullshit rule is the bottom of the barrel makes the least money delivery driver.
The point I’m trying to make here is the age old gripe that the while the working class people slave every day the rich just sit back and get richer. I don't mean I expect the owner of a successful business to show up, roll up his sleeves and start working. But they should at least see to it that the people making them there money don't get screwed over if something happens. This isn't the case they treat you like you are 100% replaceable and unless you have a really good job that only you can do guess what, you are! The only thing they care about is what is in there best interest and that would be their money. There is nothing in this world that is more American then the all mighty dollar. Even companies with words like insurance in their names try to screw you every chance they get just to save money. While I was sitting here writing this I have the television on behind me and I’ve heard at least 3 different commercials talking about how they are there for you. I don’t think I’m going to be able to watch another insurance add without laughing at it.
I am the first to admit that I’m not the smartest guy in the world or even writing for this zine. So if you understand this whole insurance thing better then me please write or email me and let me know all about. Write me at Hub-Bub, P.
