Crest
In 1945 the U.S. Army's 35th division liberated the French town of Crest from German occupation.  A young chaplain, Charlie Arbuthnot (Ann's Dad), proudly led the way to announce to the town's people that the Germans had fled.

Here's the view of the town from the bridge that crosses the Drome river.  You can see the medieval tower/castle at the top of the town.

On our way home from our ski vacation in Val Thorens we made a detour to see the town of Crest.  We found it was much bigger than we had expected and quite bustling on a Saturday morning.  Like many French towns, Crest has a business area, a section of shops and restaurants, and an old section of town with cobble stone streets too narrow to drive on.  We couldn't find any octogenarians to ask about whether they remembered that famous August day, 56 years ago, but I'm sure if they had, they would have been happy to tell us about it.
